One of the biggest obstacles that face treadmill users is their own mental processes. Since the motion that is undertaken on the treadmill relies on simple repetition over time, listening to music or watching a move during the session is an excellent option to investigate.
Additionally, taking in various media can be a good way to combine multiple things into one session. For example, if the individual has a TV show that they like to watch, then they can catch up on it and enjoy it while they use the treadmill.
Distracting the individual with a supplemental activity that is fun or pleasurable can cause the person to associate exercise with something that they enjoy doing. Not only will this distract them from possible strain, but it will also play a role in having them return for future sessions.
The other preferred way to distract someone from their fitness regimen on the treadmill requires a more active focus and dedication to the distraction, which involves the mental motivation and push to achieve goals. A simple example of this situation would be when an individual counts out loud for the duration of their session, because it is a quantifiable number, and each small step is an easy one to perform by itself.
Another example of this is when the individual finds a rhythm in their movements, which can be tracked and performed exactly in sequence as they move. This beat helps motivate and provides a good pace that the user has set for themselves, making it psychologically easier to keep going.
Staying focused is very important in this setting, because the sense of pleasure or purpose that is derived from the experience will have a large impact on future returns. It is a simple concept, but is still applicable- if people do not get anything out of the experience then they probably won't return to it.
Lastly, setting and meeting goals that the user has established is an excellent way to stay focused when using the treadmill. These goals represent tangible proof of progression and allow something to work toward, instead of simply being distracted.
By utilizing and combining the previously discussed concepts, it is possible to focus on something other than the pain and strain of the workout. Instead, users can find pleasure and purpose that comes with the activity, leading to more repeat trips to it.
Staying focused while on the treadmill is an important thing to do, because distractions such as strain and pain that naturally occur when working out can greatly detract from the motivation to keep going. Therefore, finding ways to occupy the mind and having something to work toward can prove to be a great ally in this instance.
