Whether it is an inborn disability or an injury caused by an accident, it can be very difficult to remain active and competitive when you experience physical barriers. Exercising and being involved in sports can be difficult enough, as far as motivation goes, when your body is fully capable of performing activities.
However, it can be even more difficult to gain the determination and motivation when there are physical issues that prevent you from being able to take part in regular sports. Just because an individual has been involved in an accident or must deal with the side effects of a crippling illness does not mean that they should consider themselves unable to participate in sports.
There are so many measures that can be taken to ensure that people are able to exercise and be just as active as those who are not challenged with physical setbacks. As far as those that are mostly confined to a wheelchair, a number of sports leagues and events have been designed to include them and give them an equal chance to be competitive and be challenged.
In fact, every four years, coinciding with the Olympics, some of the most impressive athletes in the world gather for the Paralympics events. It is a chance for those that experience physical disabilities, including problems with mobility, amputations, blindness, and Cerebral Palsy, to compete against one another in some of the same events as the main event.
They consist of both already established events that have been modified and others that have been specifically created to include individuals that experience these problems. The Paralympics is one of the largest international sporting events in the world.
Usually, the athletes that are involved are broken down into groups of those experiencing the same disabilities and then divided into the different events. One of the most exciting and anticipated events of the games is wheelchair rugby, nicknamed Murderball.
All of the of the athletes that take place in this event are quad- or paraplegic individuals, meaning that they have been paralyzed in certain areas of their body, namely the legs, lower back, and sometimes arms. The sport is played indoors on a hardwood floor, and has is played like/has rules similar to basketball, handball, hockey, and rugby.
The event tends to be very intense, and calls for the use of specially designed wheelchairs that are meant to withstand tipping and collisions. Those that are involved in quad rugby must train intensively, and have both the cardiovascular and muscular strength to propel them back and forth speedily across the court for an entire game.
It is very physical, a contact sport, that requires its players to be tough and strong. This sport has been growing in popularity and recognition each year, along with the Paralympics, especially since its introduction into the film world with the documentary "Murderball."
Anyone wanting to become involved in this sport must research the available leagues that are close to them. They will also need to meet certain physical disabilities, and also strengths, because not just any athlete has the ability to take part in it.
Athletes that are bound to wheelchairs can increase their physical strength and health mostly through the use of weights and strength training. Keeping the upper body strong and fit and increasing muscle mass in this region is extremely important, especially for those that are hoping to participate in competitive events like quad rugby, chair racing, and basketball.
Finding a personal or physical trainer that is experienced in assisting those with physical disabilities in their exercise will be the key ingredient in your workout routine. You may also find it beneficial to have a means of support available when you are unsure about how to accomplish certain activities or sports.
Those that do not have full mobility in the legs may think that obtaining cardiovascular fitness is impossible, because they cannot make regular use of an elliptical machine or treadmill. However, there are definitely ways that this can be accomplished.
It is also important to make sure to properly stretch muscles that are frequently in use, because it may improve mobility and prevent injuries. Physical limitations do not have to take over your life; you can remain competitive and active and get in great shape!
