There are many things that you can do to relieve pain during labor. These things include taking pain relievers and exercising.

Labor is not an easy task and it is quite painful. Luckily, there are a number of things that can relieve part of the pain that you may feel during this difficult task.

Some women believe that it is best to give birth naturally. This requires dealing with the pain, but it creates a special bond between mother and child.

Other women believe that it is important to go through the pain of a natural birth with your first child so you can appreciate modern medicine more. They may also believe that being aware of everything that is going on will help you when you are under pain relievers and cannot feel anything to deliver normally.

However, most women and doctors believe that there is not real value in either of these beliefs. A bond will still be created between mother and child and women tend to be able to deliver normally even if they are under pain relievers, unless they had complications to begin with.

Some women find that they do not need pain relievers because labor is easy for them comparatively. The majority of others would not dream of going through labor without it.

You specific pain threshold and type of labor will help you decide what is better for you. The first type of pain reliever that you may want to try is called Demerol.

Demerol is meperidine hydrocholoride and it is a strong analgesic. This Demerol can be administered as a shot into a muscle or it can be administered through an IV.

If the Demerol is administered through an IV, your doctor can monitor its affect on you and stop administration if you show an allergic reaction or if it becomes dangerous in some other way.

Your doctor will also be able to increase how much you are receiving if the pain is still too much. Administration of this drug is usually not started until you are well into labor.

Some women become very tense during labor. If it is necessary that you relax when you are really tense during labor, a tranquilizer can be safely administered in addition to the Demerol.

In general, Demerol tends to make women drowsy. Some women find it relaxing, others find it disorienting, and others may fell nauseous, depressed, or experience a drop in blood pressure.

Your baby can also be affected by the drug in similar ways. It could feel drowsy and have difficult time sucking or breathing.

However, these things can be easily treated at the hospital. The second pain relief option that you may select is a spinal block.

A spinal block is a shot given in the lower back that will numb the lower half of the body. This shot will take effect quickly, but it will only last one to two hours and it is not usually repeated.

It is best for quick deliveries. Side effects may include a drop in blood pressure and a slowing of the baby's heartbeat.

In addition, you must remain on your back for eight hours after delivery. Of course, the most popular form of pain relief is the epidural.

The epidural is also injected into the lower back. The mixture of anesthesia and analgesic allows you to actively be a part of the delivery through pushing while feeling very little pain.

You will probably be given an IV to help your blood pressure remain where it should. The epidural will remove all feeling from the waist down.

After labor, you will still enjoy numbness for several hours. Some women experience a headache for several days afterwards and your baby will be more likely to be drowse even though it's blood pressure generally will remain normal.

Another thing that can help relieve some of the pain you may feel during delivery is exercise. Exercise can strengthen your muscles so that you can push harder and experience a faster delivery.

In addition, exercise can help you become more flexible so that it will be easy to loosen up during labor. Exercise, even during pregnancy can provide many benefits to you and your baby and can make labor significantly easier and shorter.

Many women prefer to workout in their home on a treadmill. Even though it will be difficult to run on your treadmill later in pregnancy, you can still walk and gain benefit from it.

In addition, the running on the treadmill will help you burn calories faster after labor in order to lose the extra baby pounds. Be sure to consult your doctor before you begin exercising post-labor however.
