The eyes are your window to the world. Keeping them healthy helps you function in the world and enjoy its beauties. However, your eyes are constantly at risk from damaging UV rays and other potentially damaging elements. That's why properly caring for your eyes is crucial. Here are some tips for great eye health.

Eyesight and Nutrition

Proper nutrition can be an important part in fighting eye problems. The American Optometric Association notes that healthy amounts vitamins C and E can fight against the development of cataracts. Cataracts are a condition in which the natural lens of the eye clouds or becomes opaque, blocking vision. And it's a condition many people face. According to the AOA, more cataract extractions are performed in the United States than any other type of surgery.

It's What You Eat

Can your diet choices make an impact on your eyesight? According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), studies have found link to proper nutrition and decreased risk for eye problems. The AOA lists things you can eat that are good for the eyes. These foods include leafy green vegetables that are rich in the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. Additionally, foods that are rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin E are also believed to help promote healthy eyes. That means eating fruits and vegetables for Vitamin C and nuts, cereals and sweet potatoes for Vitamin E. Other eye-friendly elements include essential fatty acids and zinc.

The Sun

Yes, the sun is bright. And while you're outside, your eyes are exposed to potential harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation that the sun hurls our way. Wearing sunglasses with proper UV protection can shield your eyes from this radiation as well as filter light. They can aid you in preventing cataracts, skin cancer in the eyelid area, and other damage from occurring. The AOA notes that ideal sunglass will block 99 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. They should also screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light. Another way to keep the sun out of the eyes, notes Prevent Blindness America, is to wear a wide-brimmed hat or something to shade your face.

Avoiding Eyestrain

Have you ever spent hours staring at a computer screen or tried to read for too long in dim lighting? You may have experienced discomfort or difficulty focusing afterwards due to eyestrain. An article published by Medical News Today in 2006 notes how increased time spent in front of computer screens, lap tops, and other electronic devices may be causing eye fatigue for many Americans. According to the article, "a national survey of doctors of optometry found that more than 14 percent of their patients [indicated] eye or vision-related symptoms resulting from computer work."

Eyestrain can also be a sign that you need to wear glasses or get them adjusted, according to Prevent Blindness America. If you're experiencing headaches or other discomfort due to eyestrain, you might want to head to your Redmond eye doctors or your eye specialists wherever you are located.
