There is a wide array of competitive options available for those who want to get into a high intensity sport that falls into a nontraditional categorization. People who seek this kind of experience are not the typical kind of athlete, and are looking for a specific type of experience that is not easily topped by anything else.

Some people prefer the atmosphere found in team sports, because it allows them to feel like they are part of something greater than themselves, as well as giving them something to work toward with others. Other people like to have a structured setting that is inside an arena, where there rules are strictly enforced and there are no outside variable that can affect the overall outcome of the proceedings.

In an excellent combination of all of the above factors, paintball offers a highly competitive experience that is usually played in a team setting, in a controlled and structured environment that has the rules strictly enforced. While there is always the option to go play outside in a secluded area with friends, official play is always done in an arena type of setting, with active referees and very heavily enforced rules of conduct.

Paintball is played by having two opposing teams start on different sides of the arena, then having them eliminate each other by shooting balls of colored paint. Once a participant has been struck by one of these projectiles, it leaves a distinct spatter on them, which is cause for elimination.

To add to the dynamic, every paintball arena features an interesting array of cover options that change how the battle is fought, as well as breaking up sight lines that allow for easy cross room elimination by more passive participants. Therefore, players have to weave from cover to cover, using tactics to flank and eliminate their enemies without being shot themselves, making for tense games of cat and mouse within the restrictions of the arena.

Usually in this setting, the more tactically advanced and aggressive players are rewarded, because they have the skill necessary to quickly avoid fire and flank their opponents without exposing themselves. More passive participants are likely to fail, because hiding in the back of the arena near cover rarely pays off, as sniping is usually not possible at the given range and they have nowhere to run if they happen to be flanked.

The best strategies involve staying on the move and using the cover tactically to gain an advantage over opponents. Team play and coordination are devastatingly effective here, with organized groups of people winning nearly every time.

Adding to the dynamic of the sport is the physical repercussions and consequences for failure, because being struck by the projectiles can result in a good amount of pain if a player is not used to the experience. There is protective gear available to lessen the impact, but at the cost of reduced mobility and impact.

One of the more interesting things about the sport is the large amount of customization that can be invested in by the player. Along with the preference for assorted protective gear, users also have the option to bring in their own guns, which are largely customizable as well.

Therefore, participants are allowed to specialize their abilities and gear as an integral part of the activity, which can make the activity surprisingly varied. Scopes, stocks, and different magazines to hold ammunition change up the dynamic of the sport, allowing a great deal of creativity to take place.

Regular participation is a great way to improve reflexes, coordination, and leg strength. The body will be strengthened by the constant dashing to cover and maneuvering, while the natural reaction of the body to the incoming stresses is to become more adept at identifying targets and avoiding their fire when the person is spotted.

Playing paintball is a highly unique competitive experience that takes the adrenaline and intensity of military maneuvers and condenses them into a relatively short encounter that it sure to provide the participant with a great workout. The rush of energy that the person feels as they dodge incoming fire, and sprint to cover to avoid physical impacts from opponents, makes the sport a one of kind experience that will amplify reflexes and coordination along with building overall endurance levels.
