Apparently people don't call your protruding tummy beer belly for no reason at all. It is quite obvious that beer drinkers have a tendency to accumulate fat in their bellies, especially as they get older.

So is it really true that drinking beer can give you the beer belly? After all, not all beer drinkers developed them and some teetotalers have even bigger bellies.

Well, it is not necessarily the beer that causes your tummy to grow. It is the consumption of too many calories that is the culprit. So any kind of calories, whether from beer or otherwise can increase your belly fat.

However alcohol does have a negative impact with your belly fat because when you drink, your liver stops burning fat and burns the alcohol instead to get rid of the toxin faster.

Beer also gets the blame for belly fat because a typical mug of beer has about 150 calories. Can you imagine if you drink several mugs a night and the accumulation of the calories over months or even years can do to your weight?

Furthermore, alcohol can also increase your appetite. So when you are drinking at a bar or at a party, you will probably be eating more than you normally would have. That in turn will make your waistline even bigger!

Men will store fat in their tummies more so than women because women have more subcutaneous fat than men, so their fat tends to be deposited in their arms, thighs, and butts rather than in their tummies. That is why you see more men with bulging tummies.

Beer bellies tend to affect older people more because as we age, our calorie needs decline because we are less active and thus gaining weight becomes easier. Some research has even suggested that smokers may also be depositing more fat in their bellies.

Besides aesthetically unappealing, having a beer belly can also be hazardous to your health and may even be killing you. This is because beer belly fat is known as visceral fat and they can cause diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart diseases.

Doctors say that waist circumference exceeding 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women carry a much increased risk of heart diseases, metabolic syndrome, and overall mortality. However, these are just guidelines and we ought to have our waist circumferences much lower than that to be healthier.

So how do you get rid of your beer belly? The answer is obvious. Cut down on your alcohol consumption if you are a habitual drinker or even become a teetotaller. By doing this, not only are you diminishing your calorie intake, you are also saving yourself because alcohol is a toxin. Amongst many other negative health effects, alcohol can also damage your liver as well as killing your brain cells.

You can further reduce your calorie consumption by drinking plain water everyday instead of drinking sugar added drinks like tea, coffee and sodas. In addition, increase your daily activities or start a regular exercise regimen to burn even more fat.

Yes, drinking beer can indeed give you an ugly looking and dangerous beer belly!
