A stroke is medically defined as an acute medical emergency otherswise known as a "Brain Attack" which disrupts the body's circulatory system. This disruption occurs due to a blockage of the body's arteries. This causes a decrease in the amount of blood oxygen that circulates to the brain as a result a person may experience severe brain damage, immobilization and sometimes even death.

There are two main types of remedy for stroke, one used for an ischemic stroke and that of an hemorrhagic stroke. After going through a stroke, the treatment should commence immediately or within hours following the stroke. When looking after ischemic stroke a medical professional should try to stabilize the patient's life signals by giving the patient medicines that will prevent the blood from clotting The healing of hemorrhagic stroke aims to stop bleeding and minimize swelling in the brain.

Normally when a doctor treats a person for stroke they need to be notified of how long ago the symptoms occurred. They need to secure that internal bleeding doesn't take place as this can cause medical stroke treatments can worsen bleeding. It would be protocol for a scan to be done on the brain in order to diagnose the type of stroke and the severity of the damage.

Ischemic stroke can be dealt with by TPA treatment this involves using a needle to isert Tissue Plasminogen Activator (TPA) into the bloodstream. The TPA the goes through the blood vessels until it reaches the clot which caused the stroke. The TPA then breaks up the build up of blood until the blood can flow past it towards the affected areas. Note that TPA should not be given to an individual who visit the emergency theater three hours after going through a stroke because at this point the TPA is no longer effective in treating the stroke and by then it can amplify the risk of bleeding inside the head.

The Mechanical Embolus Retrieval in Cerebral Ischemia (MERCI Retriever) is a newly developed method of treating strokes but it is still in its experimental stages. This procedure uses a gadget which is placed into a blood stream in the leg that goes all the way up to a blood vessel in the brain where the blood clot takes place. The retriever then captures the clot and eliminate it from the head and regulates the blood circulation back to normal. The only issue with this method is that there are not many machines and specialists capable of taking advantage of this technology; however, it has achieved miraculous results so far.

Another form of stroke treatment is Intra-Arterial Thrombolysis which is given depending on the position of the stroke in the brain. However this form of treatment is normally only available at few hospitals because it requires expertise and expensive equipment. This treatment can be given within the first 6 hours after the stroke occurs, it consists of injecting the TPA and then inserting a special small catheter into a major blood vessel in the leg.

The catheter would be strategically advanced towards the brain using a special video camera. When the blood clot is found, the small catheter is then passed into its center at the location of the injection. The TPA then starts to dissolve the blood clot until the blood has the ability to flow past the clot towards the area of stroke, thus alleviating the area.
