Many of us worry that we might fall victim to theft while we are travelling abroad. But there are simple steps you can take in order to help ensure that you don't become a victim of theft. There are also some key tips to remember in case the worst does happen.

Before you go away, you should make sure to take out an adequate travel insurance policy. If you aren't sure exactly which travel insurance policy you need, you should get in contact with your travel insurance provider - they will be able to tell you exactly which travel insurance policy is right for you. After all, there's nothing worse than finding out that you have insufficient travel insurance cover when you try to make a claim.

Of course, the best thing to do is to try and take steps to ensure that you don't fall victim to theft in the first place. Before leaving for your destination, do some background research and find out where the worst crime hotspots are located. You should be especially cautious around airports, train-stations and bus-stations - as these are among the worst locations for theft. One website you could go to do some research is the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office homepage.

Some of the items you bring with you abroad are more precious than others - so it is important that these are kept extra safe. Losing a passport, for example, could pose major problems - so don't carry it on your person unless it is absolutely necessary. If you do find that your passport has been lost or stolen, inform the local police-station and your embassy as soon as possible. Another good idea is to make a photocopy of your passport. This should be kept separately from the original in case the original is lost.

If you find that you have lost something, or suspect that an item might have been stolen from you, it is important to contact the local police immediately. Ask them to provide you with a written statement or crime report detailing the lost or stolen item. If you do this, it should make things a lot easier when you make a claim on your travel insurance upon returning home.
