Information technology has led to the empowerment of the patient as well. There was a time when the patient had to rely completely upon whatever the doctor said and the doctor hardly had to heed to the opinion of the patient. But now this has incredibly changed due to the availability of internet.

The internet has opened up opportunity for the patient to give his opinion about the doctor. Because of this, the doctors have also become cautious in approaching the patient. They are afraid that the patient may end up posting some negative information about them.

In some cases, it has also been noted that the doctors actually make the patients sign an agreement prior to organizing the treatment; this agreement ensures the privacy of the doctor and the patient would not involve himself in giving out opinions and comments over the internet about the doctor and his service.

Nevertheless, the availability of the opportunity to give doctor reviews and doctor ratings by patients is something new and welcoming. The patients, who suffer from the mistakes carried out by doctors while treating them, generally have little options. They can move the court and seek compensation through a malpractice lawyer. But this could involve high costs and besides, doctors are usually protected by the medical boards and other associations to which they are affiliated.

However, now, there is lesser dependence upon the malpractice lawyer if the patient is well educated about how to use the internet in his own favor in order to get the justice. Though the internet does not reverse the patient's condition or bring back the money he spent on the treatment, yet it is an avenue through which he can express his grievance.

The comments he posts around the websites involved in doctor reviews and doctor ratings are browsed by thousands and thousands of other customers around the world. So the doctors can now be careful while handling the treatment, unlike before where they negligently ended up making mistakes.

But the doctor reviews and doctor ratings on websites can also work for the benefit of the doctors. Those good doctors who believe in ensuring customer satisfaction can actually use the tools of internet in spreading the word about their professional services.

If their services have been found to be good, the patients would definitely go back and provide positive ratings and reviews on the websites. When more people read them, there will be more customers for the doctors. A person referring other people to doctors has been one of the largest sources of getting customers to clinics.

In spite of all the good side of the online ratings of doctors, there is still a controversy in this regard. Doctors believe that the availability of easy access to internet gives an opportunity for just anyone to post negative feedback about them and their services.

This means that even people who have personal problems with the doctors can pose as patients and end up tarnishing their image. In other cases, some doctors also pose as patients and give extreme praise to themselves in order to market their services.
