There are many herbal or home remedies for psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes skin irritation and skin redness. Most people that suffer from this condition have thick patches of skin and flaky places that are called scales. Many natural cures can be very helpful in reducing the pain and discomfort of psoriasis, and they also lessen or completely alleviate the redness this condition causes.

Some of these herbal or home remedies for psoriasis are:

Soaking is an easy, simple treatment for psoriasis that can give sufferers relief. Soaking in a tub of tepid water (not hot, as very hot water can actually increase the itch) can rehydrate the skin and help to soften the thick areas of skin that psoriasis has caused. This will also help to remove the scales without damaging the skin. Soaking can also help to reduce the redness and itchiness caused by psoriasis. Adding Epsom salts to a bath can also reduce swelling and itch greatly.

It is important to note that frequent soaking (or even showering) will strip the skin of essential oils, so make sure to rehydrate with a good moisturizer after soaking. A thick moisturizer like shea butter is a good choice. Even olive oil can be used on the skin because it is all-natural, has antioxidants and essential oils and absorbs well into the skin.

And this leads to the next home remedy, which is moisturizing. Keeping the skin moist at all times is important when one has psoriasis. Moisturizing can help alleviate the dryness, redness and itching. There are many skin lotions available today that are made specifically for dry, cracked, itchy red skin, so look for these at a drugstore or health store.

Avoiding extreme cold temperatures is important as well, because colder air dries out the skin. If one is exposed to cold temperatures, moisturizer is a necessity.

Doctors often prescribe ultraviolet light treatments for those who suffer from psoriasis. However, these treatments can be quite costly in a doctor's office. A cheaper alternative is to simply get more sun - but not too much. The UVB rays of the sun increase production of vitamin D, which has been shown to help fight psoriasis. If heading outside to indulge in the sun, make sure to use a sunscreen, but not a sunblock, as a sunblock will deflect the UVB rays.

The diet is also an important way to go about fighting the effects of psoriasis. Take a vitamin D supplement, eat more organic vegetables and take in more fiber. One vegetable that doctors recommend is the bitter gourd. It can be fried or eaten in a stir fry, or one can drink the juice, mixed with a bit of lemon or lime. Bitter gourd supplements can also be purchased and taken daily.

For those suffering from the pain of this autoimmune disease, it is good to try as many natural or home remedies for psoriasis as possible in order to find the one that works best for you.
