When you become a nurse you have to make sure that you understand the laws and regulations that you will need to abide by. You will be required to know this information when you go to take your state board exams.
There are many nurses that need a refresher course when they have been practicing for many years. Take the time to understand what laws and regulations you need to abide by when you are a nurse so that you do not have to deal with any legal repercussions.
First, every state has a Nurse Practice Act and each state will have a different act than the other states around them. You have to make sure that you understand what your state says specifically so that you are protected by the law.
The limitations of your profession and the training specifications that each nurse needs to abide by are set out in this Act. Each nurse must be trained in a specific area of nursing and the different areas will be set out in this act.
This also means that the nurse must practice only in the type of nursing that he or she has been trained in. If a nurse is not trained to administer a certain set of medications or give treatment to a patient he or she cannot do so by law.
Nurses must also work closely with a physician or another nursing authority when a situation arises that necessitates the nurse to work in an area in which he or she is not trained. When it is possible, you must find a nurse that is trained in this type of nursing.
You should also make sure that you understand that by not following this act a nurse can lose his or her license. Not only will the nurse loose the license that they worked so hard for, but you may also be sued by the patient, life insurance agency, health care facility or hospital.
A nurse also has the legal responsibility to be the advocate for the patient in all health care instances, including emergencies. The nurse must look out for the patient's best interest at all times.
The nurse is supposed to be the liaison between the physician and the patient. There is a legal duty that eh nurse must adhere to that requires the nurse to monitor the patient and watch for any type of complication or even abnormality that may occur.
When these abnormalities or complications occur the nurse must find a physician to administer to the cares of the patient. Taking the time to watch the patient can be frustrating and often mundane but you have to understand your legal implications.
Nurses also have to make sure that they understand what their license to administer medication implies. They must take the time to accurately and timely administer the medicine that the patient requires in his or her time of need.
The nurse must take the time to read the charts and to understand the files that have been composed about the patient. Nurses must also understand how to interpret the charts and know what allergies the patients may have.
Understanding the combination of medication is also important. Taking the time to know if the combination of different medications is going to be mal beneficial for the patient is also the responsibility of the nurse.
When a nurse does not understand the proper dosage of a medication he or she can cause some major problems for the patient. The nurse must know when and how much medication needs to be administered to their patients.
The nurse must also make sure that they are not neglectful of their patients. Taking the time to understand the needs of the patient and to care for the patient are imperative as you are learning how to abide by the nursing laws.
Taking the time to understand the laws will save you a lot of time and possibly your career. When you understand the laws you will be capable of being a nurse that is successful for many years to come.
When economic times are hard you have to make sure that you are taking the time to understand how to keep your job. As you are nursing take the time to value your job, make sure that you understand the laws that will enable you to keep your job.
Nursing can be a great career if you take the time to understand all that you can do to stay in the career.
