When you are getting your wisdom teeth removed it can be a very scary process. To make sure that you survive the procedure and you are able to heal quickly you want to educate yourself before you even go in to have the teeth removed.

First, you want to make sure that you follow all directions that you oral surgeon gives you. Some people feel that the directions are ridiculous or too cautions, but your doctor has very specific reasons in giving you the directions that he or she does.

If you are confused about the directions do not be afraid to ask. Your doctor or one of your doctor's assistants will be able to discuss what the directions mean and why it is important to follow them if you need this.

When you know that you need your wisdom teeth removed you want to make sure that you get the problem taken care of promptly. There are many people that go in too late and find that their teeth have already moved.

Some people do not have any problem with their wisdom teeth. As you start to feel these teeth pop in you want to make sure that you know how you are going to deal with the teeth so that they do not cause problems.

This means you will need to set an appointment with your doctor as soon as you feel those teeth coming in. This appointment can end up saving you a lot of time and money in the long run if you are able to assess the condition of the wisdom teeth.

Second, you want to make sure that after the procedure is done you allow your body time to rest. You want to give your body the ability to recover so that the process is as short as it can possibly be.

If you are going to be put under you want to make arrangements to have someone come pick you up. The effects of the anesthesia can take a long time to recover from and you want to make sure that you are able to get home to rest as soon as possible.

When you make this arrangement you want to make it with someone that is dependable and reliable. If that individual does not show up to pick you up, you may be stuck in the office for many hours before you are suitable to leave.

After you have your surgery the doctor will more than likely give you a prescription for antibiotics or pain killers. Do not be afraid to use them and make sure that you use them wisely and do not abuse the pain killers.

There are many people that will forget about the antibiotics to only take the painkiller. To avoid infection you have to make sure that you are taking the antibiotics that have been prescribed to you after your surgery.

Third, you have to keep your mouth clean as it is healing. Taking this task seriously may be the difference between healing quickly and healing well and having an infection fester in your mouth and cause you a lot of pain.

As you are taking the time to keep your mouth clean you will want to rinse your mouth out when you are done eating. This will allow you to rid your mouth of any debris that may cause bacteria growth in your mouth.

Rinsing your mouth out with warm salt water is a great way to get rid of debris and also help your mouth heal faster. When your wounds come in contact with the salt water they will be better equipped to heal.

Finally, after you have your surgery you want to make sure that you are eating the proper foods. There are many people that do not understand how much damage they can do to their mouth if they do not keep themselves on a strict diet.

When you are taking the time to keep your mouth healthy you do not want to digress because of the food you are eating. Keep the solid foods to a minimum at first and make sure that all of the food you are eating is soft.

You should also make sure that you are taking the time to avoid sucking out of straws. This can cause some serious problems in your mouth that will be painful and take a lot of time to fix if you are not treated immediately.
