Running on a treadmill may be boring, but running on a trail can be more appealing if you find the right location. Almost every city has at least one jogging trail open to the public.

This can be by the local river, in the mountains, by the beach, or in the local park. Either way, there is some kind of scenery that you can enjoy while getting your exercise time in.

Not only that, but most trails have some upward and downward slopes, which equates to you working harder (and not as hard) in certain areas. Making sure your body does not get used to the same flat track is important to pushing harder to get better results.

Trails are also a great way to meet new people that you come across on the path. Frequent joggers often make new friends and jogging buddies because of their common interest in fitness and location.

If running in general is not something you enjoy, or you have bad knees, biking may be a better option. Biking is very versatile, and people of all ages can choose a style that is best for them.

Just like jogging trails, there are bike trails available for road bikes and mountain bikes, and parks for BMX bikes. If you have a road bike, all you need is pavement to ride on, which you can find just about anywhere.

You can go anywhere the street does, which means you can take a new path everyday to mix things up and see places in your city that you would have otherwise not gone by. You can also use it as your eco-friendly form of transportation by riding to work and from work in the summertime.

Alternatively, you can get more adventure time by hitting the trails with a mountain bike. These have thinker tires and a larger frame to support riding over dirt and rocks.

This can be even more rigorous than traditional bike riding, and offers you more adrenaline as you are tearing through trees and over boulders. It is, however, more dangerous, which is why you should not only wear a helmet, but pads and protective gear on your legs, arms, and shoulders as well.

This is typically an activity for the more young and agile, and should be done with a partner or group just in case an accident happens on the trail. If you do not live near the mountains, BMX riding is a great choice, and more concrete parks are going up in cities specifically for the use of bikes.

You typically see teenagers participating in this activity, but there is no reason why adults can't join in on the fun as well. Just make sure you wear all the protective gear, as falling on concrete after coming off of a jump that threw you seven feet in the air can be very painful.

Another option for a cardio workout is rock climbing. This popular activity requires at least one partner, though more is probably a good idea, and is a great cardio workout.

You should definitely find partners that you trust, because it is their hands in which you are placing your safety. You will support your partner just as they will support you, and you need to work together to ensure that you stay anchored to the cliff and your rope does not fall.

As you climb up the side of a cliff, you exert quite a bit of energy which, in turn, burns a lot of calories. Since you are hanging from a cliff, you should wear protective gear just in case an accident happens to protect yourself in any way that you can.

You may have to go out of your way to find a good place to climb, but it will be well worth the drive when you get out of the city and into nature. While climbing, you get to experience views that you could not see from on the ground.

Any of these outdoor activities are a great way to get in cardiovascular exercise while still having some fun. Make sure you stay safe and use all the protective gear necessary for your activity.
