Allergy triggers can be just as much of a problem at night as they are during the day. But struggling with symptoms at night interferes with sleep which means your body is less able to deal effectively with the challenges of the new day. Here are 5 allergens to minimize in your bedroom that will allow you to get a good night's sleep.

Dust Mites----These eight-legged bugs are virtually invisible to the human eye, but they thrive in the bedroom. This is because they need high humidity levels, and a warm dark environment. They also feed on dead skin cells from warm-blooded animals and people making the bedroom, and more specifically your bed, a prime location.

They do not bite or attach to the body in any way; and are only a problem because many people are allergic to the protein in their fecal material. They make their homes in pillows, mattresses and bedding triggering a number of allergy symptoms which make it tough to sleep.

Encasing pillows and mattresses in a covering that stops them from being able to take up residence in your bedding is a great way to reduce their numbers. Washing bed linen frequently in water that is 140 degrees Fahrenheit or hotter will kill them. Airing the bed frequently is also good because sunlight kills them.

Pet Dander---If you allow your pet in the bedroom or on the bed, this increases he amount of dander that you are exposed to, and gives the mites more food to feed on. If you suspect that your allergies are also triggered by dander, try making the bedroom off limits for your pet. Some dander will still get into your room and the air but not as much as if your pet is given free run of the room.

Odors---There are many items in a bedroom that can off-gas low amounts of chemical fumes and odors that you may not be aware of. Pressed wood furniture, drapes that have been treated with fire resistant spray, formaldehyde in carpets, and adhesives and glues used to install carpet.

In addition to these there can be exposure to scents in numerous cleaning solutions and personal products. Making your bedroom scent free by carefully choosing the types of things allowed in the bedroom can literally clear the air, and make it easier to breathe if you are at all sensitive to chemicals.

Mold and Mildew Spores----Spores are powerful allergens that cause problems for allergy sufferers. House plants whose soil is kept damp can cause mold to grow and release spores.

Using a humidifier without changing the water frequently can also encourage mold growth. If mold finds moisture in an adjoining bathroom, this can mean bad news for being able to sleep in the bedroom. Limiting water sources can greatly reduce the number of spores that are able to grow.

Dust----The dust in your home can be a combination of many things, many of which can contain particles that trigger your allergies. Vacuuming the surfaces with a cleaner that filters the air before it is returned to your room is one more way to reduce the number of allergens that are preventing you from sleeping.

You can further minimize allergens that go airborne by filtering your air with an air purifier specifically designed to eliminate airborne allergens found in your bedroom. Constant filtration will further reduce allergens and help you get a good night's sleep every night.
