Have you ever seen the movie "Mean Girls"? An accurate account of what many girls go though in Jr. High. Schools are divided up into sections; each group of girls knows where the boundaries are, which boys are up for grabs and which are taken. Do not cross the lines, do not talk to the wrong boy, do not wear the wrong shade of eye shadow, and do not bring the wrong thing for lunch.
Do not wear the wrong label of clothes, do not wear the wrong kind of shoes, and do not talk to the wrong sort of girl either those who are too geeky, too sleazy or too cool for you. Do not do too well in class do not do too poorly either. If you can remember all the do's and don't and somehow avoid tripping over yourself, sneezing at the wrong moment than you might tread the labyrinth of Jr. High unscathed. Good luck, you would be the only girl in the history of mankind, or should I say womankind, to do so.
Jr. High, face it, is just plain painful. With braces, glasses, gawky, awkward movement, no self-esteem and very little feelings of self worth, Jr. High is our cultures equivalent of the rites of passage used by Native American tribes. Some women wake up in terror for years that they are forever thirteen and stuck eternally in Jr. High. What if you wore braces, glasses and tripped over your feet for life? What if you didn't wear braces, get contacts and still trip over your feet? Adults in mass are visiting Manhattan orthodontist and getting rid of crocked teeth and awkward smiles, they should have rid themselves of in Jr. High. It is never too late to be beautiful and self-confident!
The rules change by the time you get to high school. It still takes a tight rope walker to navigate the do's and don't but people seem a little bit more forgiving as they become a little more self assured. Jr. High is tough. The rules are unwritten and change from day to day. What is cool one week can get you stuffed in a locker or left out of a group of friends the next.
If you have a Jr. High student living in your home, be kind, be patient and be supportive. It is a painful process to go from a caterpillar to a butterfly but with a little love and support, the transformation can be astounding! Do not wake up sweating that you are still in Jr. High. Get those teeth straightened by a Manhattan orthodontist, trade the glasses in for contacts and start flying a little higher with a little more confidence and poise, you are a butterfly!
