One of the many things that should not go in the food storage cupboards is protein drinks. Protein drinks are not a proper substitute for meals among many other things.
One of the many things that people, particularly athletes, view as a great way to gain muscle and energy after working out is protein shakes. These shakes are beginning to gain a reputation not only for muscle gain, but as a good part of a diet designed to help you lose weight.
These shakes can be easy to prepare, taste fairly good, and healthy. The main task of these drinks is to help your body rebuild the muscles after you have exercised or torn them.
However, they should not replace regular meals in a daily diet. These drinks do not contain all of the nutrients that your body needs to function properly.
On occasion, they can replace a meal if there is nothing else to eat or if you do not have time to eat a full meal. However, too many people make them a permanent meal replacement, which is quite unhealthy.
Unfortunately, the people who view these drinks as a suitable replacement for a meal think that these drinks are a good thing to store in their food storage. They may last for quite a while, but they will not provide you with everything you need, particularly when food is scarce.
Of course, these drinks are better than no food or source of nutrition at all. In these cases, you will suffer from malnutrition anyway, but the drink may provide you with some energy to continue working to find other sources of food.
These drinks are also not suitable for food storage because studies have found that many of them have been contaminated with other things that are not healthy for you. The main contaminant found was lead with a dosage of 6 to 18 g per drink.
During this study they also found that many of the companies producing these products underrepresented the amount of sugar that was actually present in the drink. One drink has as much as four extra grams of sugar per serving.
This was probably done in order to persuade people that the drink was healthier than it was. Few products were found that contained more than the allowed contamination amount, but many of the drinks had some form of contamination.
If a person drank more than one serving a day, these contamination amounts could add up and provide a harmful amount of the contaminant to that person. Some of the products also contained arsenic and cadmium.
The ingredients that are normally found in these drinks include whey (milk), casein, and egg. Whey is included because it is a complete macronutrient and it is natural.
Due to the fact that it is a complete macronutrient, it is very easy for your body to digest it. This is why it has the name of a "fast" protein.
Casein is included because it has a high amount of glutamine. Glutamine helps to preserve the muscles after they have been built.
However, casein is much harder to digest and it does not help build muscles as much. For this reason, people tend to prefer the drinks with whey powder.
The last ingredient, egg, is digested even slower than casein. However, this protein also helps you to build muscles and has very few calories.
It also does not contain carbohydrates or fats. As a result, egg powder is also quite popular.
Due to the differences in ingredients, many athletes include several different protein drinks in their diet. An athlete may drink the casein drink at night because it will take all night to digest while whey is best in the morning or before work outs.
Despite the benefits that these drinks do offer, they need to be combined with other meals. In addition, an overdose on protein can also have negative health effects.
For example, too much protein may cause dehydration and digestive problems if you do not drink enough water. It will also put you at a higher risk for osteoporosis and occasionally kidney problems.
Natural forms of protein are generally better for you. Chicken, milk, and regular eggs can all give you the protein that you need after a workout.
In addition, there are forms of these things that you can store in food storage. Dried milk still contains much of the nutrition that your body would normally get from regular milk once it is reconstituted.
There are also forms of eggs and freeze dried chicken can be found in many prepackaged soups and freeze dried meals. There are many options in which you can get the protein that you need.
