When you know that you want to get in more cardiovascular exercise but you have bad joints you want to make sure that you are picky about your workouts. Taking the time to be selective about what you do and do not do is important.

First, you have to make sure that you understand the different means of exercise that are available to you. The more that you understand about the cardiovascular exercises the better able you will be to make a decision that is beneficial.

Anything that involves running can be very hard on the joints in your body. You want to make sure that you understand how you are going to avoid running when you are looking to get your heart rate up.

Many people give up when they realize that running is not good for their joints. It may be hard to walk away from a sport or an activity that you love, but walking away now may be able to help you save your joints.

There are a lot of people that start to swim when they have to give up running. As you start to swim you want to make sure that you can do so safely and that you have the ability to be able to push yourself to get a great workout.

Taking the time to understand how you are going to find a pool and the equipment to swim may be overwhelming. Instead, you may want to use a machine like an elliptical or a stationary bike as you are exercising.

An elliptical is pretty self-explanatory. When you get on the machine you stand on platforms and push them through a running motion without ever having to lift your feet off of the platforms when you are on the machine.

If you decide that you are going to use a stationary bike you have to make sure that you understand what is available to you. There are few different bikes that you can use when you are trying to work out.

The first type of machine that many people hear about is an upright bike. This is the bike that will be most similar to the bikes that you would ride outside on the street, but obviously this bike does not go anywhere.

The upright bike is a great way to get in a good cardiovascular workout without hurting your joints. You want to make sure that you understand how you are going to pedal and push throughout the entire workout.

The other type of bike that you can use is the recumbent bike. This is the bike that has the bucket type seats and you pedal by extending your feet out in front of you rather than down below you.

Neither of the bikes is better than the other, you should try both of the bikes. When you are trying both of the bikes you will be able to make a more educated decision as to which bike will work the best for your body.

Once you get on a bike you first want to make sure that you adjust your seat and pedal positions. You have to make sure that you are able to fully extend your leg to be sure that you can push through an entire cycle.

When you cannot extend your leg entirely you will be losing a lot of power with each pedal. You want to make sure that your hips are comfortable so you are not straining them throughout your workout.

If your bike has handlebars you also want to make sure that the handlebars in the correct positions. Your arms should not extend beyond shoulder level when you are reaching out to grab onto the handlebars.

When you are exceptionally tall or exceptionally short it can be hard to find a bike that will work with your height. Taking the time to find a bike that is comfortable to you will enable you to make the best out of your time on the bike.

There will also be straps on the pedals that you will want to adjust. Your foot should not be slipping off of the pedals throughout your workout and you should not have to concentrate on keeping your foot on top of the pedal.

Finally, no matter what you do you want to make sure that you are keeping your heart beating and working hard. Taking the time to find a workout that is going to work the best for you is very important.
