Teeth are very interesting and humans seem to have an innate interest in teeth. One of the reasons for this interest is because of the dependency that they have on them every day.
You use your teeth to eat, tear, make noise, talk, smile, and do a variety of other actions. Through experience, you probably also know that your teeth must be properly taken care of in order to be able to function properly and not cause pain.
The prevention of pain is definitely a motivating factor for driving interest, particularly for teeth. Another reason that humans may be interested in teeth is because of the 'cool' factor that is placed on the teeth of various animals.
One of the most popular types of animal teeth that humans tend to like to collect are shark teeth. Sharks are viewed as vicious, dangerous animals that should be avoided when swimming, but were a trophy kill for the great warrior in the past.
As a result, the possession of shark teeth indicated great bravery from killing a shark or luck in finding the teeth on the shore. These teeth symbolized a variety of different things for historical peoples.
The two prominent things that a necklace of shark teeth was believed to do was lend the power of a shark to a great warrior who wore it or to protect a person from a shark attack when worn.
Today, these teeth are very popular souvenirs for tourists because they represented so many things. Their popularity makes these teeth quite valuable in various tourist areas.
Many people like to search for and collect shark teeth for a hobby. Not only are they able to enjoy the prestige of owning many shark teeth, but they can collect a few extra dollars by selling them.
In order to collect these teeth you will need a jar or bucket, shovel, sifter or separator and comfortable clothing for getting wet and walking around on a beach in. Most of these things can be easily found around your home.
Unless you plan to dig in the sand extensively, the shovel you use does not need to be larger than a larger, hand gardening shovel. A sifter can be easily made with some wood and a piece of wire screen.
The comfortable clothes are up to you. You know what would be the most comfortable for you to walk around on the beach in.
Most people prefer a combination of bathing suit and multiple layers so that it is easier to deal with the changing temperatures and weathers on the beach. Once you have collected all of these things, you will want to do some research online to find out which beaches tend to be the best for collecting shark teeth.
Then, you will want to make plans to visit that beach, perhaps multiple times for several hours if not all day. If a beach is well known for the presence of shark teeth, it has probably been picked out and scoured many times.
On a beach that is not well known for shark teeth, these teeth may be scarce. Either way, it is going to take some time and effort to be able to find the teeth that you are looking for.
The best time of the day to look for teeth is during the low tides. Areas with dark sand tend to hide the most shark teeth.
In addition, you should look for areas where teeth may have been trapped. These places may include washouts, around rocks, and so forth.
In these areas, stop and collect some sand with your shovel and put it in your sifter. If you see any dark and triangular shapes, you may have found what you are looking for.
When it is covered in wet sand, it may be hard to distinguish from a bit of shell or other ocean residue. However, clean it off and check to make sure it really is a shark tooth.
It would be embarrassing to go home and state triumphantly that you found a shark tooth when you really only found a bit of shell and someone notices. If it is a shark tooth, be sure to put it carefully in your jar or bucket.
At home, you may want to compare the tooth with a guide to determine which kind of shark the tooth belonged to. Some types of teeth are rarer than others and therefore are worth more money and could fuel your interest in teeth even more.
