Treadmills began as a device used in nineteenth-century British prisons to reform prisoners. Since that time the device has been altered and become a regular part of exercise routines for many people.

The treadmill has many benefits. For those who live in a metropolitan area, or in a colder climate, it may not be possible to run outside.

The treadmill offers those people the chance to run. Running has many benefits for wellness.

Running increases heart and lung health. The strain placed on these organs while running causes them to become stronger.

Those who run also lower their potential for both heart and lung disease. For some who run there is a potential for weight loss as well.

Physical activity burns calories, and, certainly, running burns many. This causes an increase in metabolism.

For those struggling to keep their cholesterol down a good work out might just do the trick. Running has been shown to lower cholesterol which further improves heart health.

The skeletal system also benefits when an individual runs. There may even be an increase in bone density when a person runs.

One benefit of running that is not as physically evident is an improvement in mood. Physical activity releases endorphins in the brain which cause a natural "high".

With this knowledge in mind, it becomes clear why those who do run enjoy it so much. Running literally makes runners feel better

This change in attitude can have an impact on a person's social life, and, of course, their emotional health. Depression is less of an issue for those who run.

Taking all these benefits into consideration, it is no wonder that running is also thought to slow the aging of the human body. Many people want to look and feel younger and running may provide a way to fulfill their dreams.

There is also an added benefit in that those who run outdoors are able to enjoy the scenery of their chosen route. The less busy roadways on which many choose to run often offer spectacular views or tranquil sights.

It is difficult for those who enjoy running to imagine a better experience than making their way along an open stretch of road as the sun creeps over the eastern horizon. For many running is a way of getting in touch with nature.

There are dangers of injury inherent to the sport as well, but if one is wise these can be avoided. A runner should always first stretch, allowing the muscles to warm up.

A runner should be certain to stretch all the vital muscles in the legs. You might lean against a wall while standing on one foot and pull the other leg up behind you.

You should also put the soles of your feet together while sitting and try to get your knees as close to the floor as possible. Also, while sitting, stretch your legs straight out in front of you and attempt to touch your toes.

Another important stretch is to cross one leg, bent at the knee, over the other which is held straight out in front of the body while sitting. The person then turns in the opposite direction of the crossed-over leg.

A runner will also usually stretch the arms and shoulder muscles. All of these stretches prepare the muscles for physical activity.

This preparation is vital because the entire body will be involved during the work out. Proper technique involves many of the muscles in the body.

A runner should be sure not to overdo his work out. It is not good for a runner to be very tired or out of breath during his work out.

If a runner does feel out of breath or exhausted it is wise to reduce the distance run or the speed of the run. The benefits of this type of exercise come more from the consistency with which it is done rather than the number of miles or miles per hour.

Running has many great benefits and should certainly be enjoyed outside if at all possible. If this is not a possibility, running on a treadmill is a great substitute.

Many gyms have treadmill machines. If you prefer to work out in your own home, however, it is possible also to purchase a treadmill to use at your leisure.
