Chiropractors began practicing on patients around the turn of the 20th century. Chiropractors were initially met with much skepticism. People accused them of practicing medicine without a license. In fact, several chiropractors were thrown in jail for this reason. However, as time passed, more and more people began to accept chiropractics as a legitimate practice of medicine. Today, chiropractics is an area of scholarly study. As more research is performed on the field, more and more tools are being developed to help chiropractors treat patients. What began as a type of medicine involving only the hands has developed into more complex procedures that utilize several different tools.

The activator adjusting instrument is used by almost all chiropractors. It is a small, hand-held device that is used to make targeted adjustments to a patient's body. The activator adjusting instrument delivers quick thrusts to areas of muscle and nerve tissue. It is a completely pain-free procedure. The activator adjusting instrument's fast movements are met with little resistance by muscles. This allows chiropractors to perform adjustments with great precision using the tool.

Another tool commonly used by chiropractors is the nervoscope. Nervoscopes are used to measure the temperature of skin along the spine. The device is extremely accurate and is used to take temperature readings before and after a patient undergoes a chiropractic treatment. The temperature readings are used to assess the effectiveness of treatment and make any necessary adjustments.

The x-ray is an essential tool for any chiropractor. X-rays are used to find the exact position and condition of bones in a person's body. X-rays and chiropractics have a similar history. They were both invented in 1895 and have dealt with skepticism from the public. In the 1950's people began to fear the use of x-rays due to radiation. However, it was quickly discovered that the small doses of radiation used during the x-ray process are not harmful. As a result, patients can rest easy when x-rays are taken at a chiropractor.

Chiropractors frequently use traction devices. Traction devices are used on specific areas of the spine to help straighten vertebrae and ease muscle tension. The size and shape of traction equipment varies based on the chiropractor office you visit. For example, a chiropractor in Manhattan may have smaller traction equipment than a chiropractor you visit in Brooklyn. However, all of the traction devices can be used to reduce nerve pressure and decompress bone discs no matter their size or appearance.
