Cycling is a cardiovascular activity that is obviously beneficial to your overall health, but there are specific areas of the body that this activity targets. The activity strengthens the heart which keeps your blood pressure and cholesterol at a healthy level, and helps prevent illnesses like cardiovascular disease.

Cycling also helps you increase your strength, especially in your leg muscles. The constant pedaling works on the muscles in your legs allowing them to become more lean.

You also get an increased sense of balance and flexibility. Any type of activity where you are exercising your muscles allows you to stretch them out so that they are more flexible and versatile in different activities.

While you are riding you have to control your body and you bike so that you stay upright. The strength and balance that this requires will translate to improved performance in other activities in your life that require balance, strength, and coordination.

Fitness also increases you endurance in terms of physical activity. If you wake up one morning and decide that you want to go for a day long hike in the mountains with your friends, you want to be able to that.

If you do not have the endurance of stamina to do prolonged physical activity, the day will be one of pain and exhaustion. Cycling helps your muscles and your lungs build up the endurance to participate in other physical activities that you may encounter.

When most people think exercise they think of weight loss, and riding a bike delivers on this as well. This cardiovascular exercise is an effective way to burn calories.

The great thing about bicycle riding is the fact that is can be done by people of all ages. You can start as young as a toddler pedaling around a little tricycle to the senior citizen who has aching joints and cannot handle the physical impacts of jogging.

In addition to being great for your overall health, the activity is also a proven stress reliever. Whether you are out there for enjoyment or for losing weight, you can be sure to feel relaxed and energized by the time you get to wherever you are going.

This physical activity is one that is not mundane or boring; it is fun, which is why people of all ages love doing it. Using your two wheels to get you around also means that there is one less car out on the road.

More people are moving towards being eco-friendly, and this is one of the ways you can pitch in and join people in the movement to help save the planet. A bicycle emits no pollution into the air, you do not have to worry about rush hour traffic, and you will feel better about yourself when you get to your destination.

You will also be able to ditch the loud noises that cars generate, allowing you to better interact with the people around you. You can wave to your neighbors, say stop and say hello to friends you pass by, and you get to take in all of the sounds, colors, and smalls that you could not notice inside of your car.

Bikes do not require gas or oil, which not only helps the environment, but saves your wallet as well. You do not have to worry about refilling a tank every week, going in for a quarterly oil change, or paying for expensive tune ups.

It costs the average driver between 20 and 30 cents per mile to operate their car, and this does not take into consideration the depreciation of the vehicle of the taxes and insurance that you have to pay just to own the vehicle. Not only that, but you also get to save on the cost of parking tolls, as parking a bike is completely free.

You also do not have to worry about traffic jams, road rage, and waiting for construction crews to clear up the roads. For your short trips to work, school, the library, or anywhere around town, you can easily take your bicycle and not have to think that it is taking you significantly longer than it should.

Cycling has so many benefits for your body, mind, bank account, and planet. Every person who is able should get out there and ride their bike to reap the benefits and just enjoy themselves.
