There are so many ways in which to get a cardio-vascular work out. You can go running, take a walk, or ride a bike.

Living in a city, or leading a busy life style can hinder a person's attempts at getting that work out. In the city, you may not have a place to run, walk, or bike.

Those with little time to spare before or after punching the clock may choose to join a gym or to work out at home. The quality and intensity of their work out is vital to their getting in shape.

Working out at a gym or at home offers some choices of machines, any one of which can give you a great cardio-vascular work out. Using a work out machine can improve any routine.

A treadmill simulates the act of running and is good for those who do not have the option of running outside. This machine may, however, cause damage to the joints just as running does.

Elliptical machines offer a low impact alternative to running. The motion involved in operating an elliptical machine is very similar to running, but does not strain the joints as much.

For those who enjoy bicycling, but either don't have a place to ride or don't have the time to ride long distances an exercise bike might be a worthwhile alternative. The machine is designed to simulate a bicycle ride, and can be used to train for cycling events.

These machines generally are about the same size as, or smaller than, other types of exercise machines. Also, an exercise bike is very quiet, which is important for those who are working out at home and don't want to disturb their family or neighbors.

Models using fans, however, may be noisier than other options. If noise is not an issue for you, a fan system is fine.

The work out offered by an exercise bike is low impact. Some models can be manipulated in regards to resistance, thus allowing the person exercising to decide how intense their work out will be.

When choosing an exercise bike, find out which one will afford enough resistance to make your work outs worthwhile. Also, consider one that has an option to increase beyond your current threshold so that you can increase the resistance as you become stronger.

This is one item of many to think about when selecting an exercise bike. There are two major varieties of the machine: standard upright and recumbent.

The standard upright variety of this machine resembles a classic bicycle. The operator sits on the seat, leans forward grasping the handlebars, and peddles the bicycle.

Generally the seats of this type of exercise bike are designed to be comfortable, but it may be an issue for those who experience pain in their lower back.

For a more relaxed work out there is the recumbent variety. The seat is usually lower than on the standard upright model.

To operate this variety of exercise bike the individual sits on the seat and grasps the handlebars, but he is able to lean back while peddling. Deciding between the two varieties is simply a matter of personal preference.

Another option to consider is the type of resistance provided by the exercise bike. Some bikes use fans, others magnets or belts.

Usually the machine will have the option of changing the resistance for a work out session. A person desiring a more intense work out can increase the resistance of the machine.

When deciding on a machine, it is important to consider safety. Before purchasing or using a machine take a look at it and assess any safety concerns.

An exercise bike should be stable. If the base is not wide enough the machine might easily topple, causing injury to you and others around you.

Another safety concern is the resistance mechanism of the machine. If not properly covered a fan or belt could cause a severe injury.

The sturdiness of the machine is also cause for consideration. Was it built by a well-known fitness company?

Make sure to determine whether the parts of the machine seem like they will not easily be broken. Also, ascertain whether you will be able to get substitute parts, in case a part does fail.

After you have considered all of these important items, you will be able to make a well founded decision of which machine to purchase or use. You will then be well prepared to get in shape.
