Dealing With Food Intolerance

Many people do not think about the fact that their food storage may not provide them with the nutrients that their body needs if they were to rely on food storage alone. Sadly, even fewer people do not think about the fact that there needs to be variety in food storage to prevent the occurrence of food intolerance.

Food intolerance is something that occurs commonly as people age. However, it can occur when you are forced to eat only one type of food that you are not used to eating suddenly.

For example, wheat is a common component of food storage. Unfortunately, many children are not used to eating wheat, let alone only wheat.

As a result, if they are forced to depend on a primarily wheat food storage, they may not be able to physically eat it after a couple of weeks. Allergic reactions among other problems may develop.

This is actually a fairly common occurrence. However, whenever it happens, it must be dealt with to relieve discomfort and other problems.

Many people confuse the terms food intolerance and food allergy. Food intolerance is when the body decides that it is going to have difficulty digesting a certain item.

Food allergies are when the food causes a battle with your immune system. The two foods that cause the highest number of intolerances among people are cow's milk and wheat or other grains.

However, other foods such as soy products, caffeine, chocolate, orange juice, tomatoes and food additives can also cause intolerance problems. Intolerance problems are manifested through discomfort when a particular food is eaten.

Some of the discomfort you may experience could come in the form of anxiety, depression, fatigue, headaches, skin disorders, asthma, joint or muscle pain, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcers (mouth or stomach), water retention, stomach bloating, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome. If you suspect that a particular food is causing a problem for you, try keeping a food diary and not eating that food for an entire month.

During that month evaluate how you feel. Then, compare when you did eat the food and when you did not to determine whether you felt the same or whether your condition improved one way or the other.

Unfortunately, there is no cure of intolerance of a specific type of food. The best thing you can do for yourself if you have one is to look for other foods that will supply the nutrients to your body that the food you are currently eating is responsible for supplies.

Often there are alternative foods that you can eat that will satisfy your taste buds and will provide you with the nutrition you need, while not upsetting your stomach. Some people find that they do not have to completely cut the intolerant food item out of their diet, they simply have to limit the amount that they eat.

For example, if milk is a problem then you may be able to drink one cup a day, but you will have problems if you drink three cups a day. Or you may be able to have some milk mixed in with something else, but that is as much as you can handle.

However, if you cannot drink milk at all, you need to make sure you make up for the lack of calcium in other ways. Women in particular need to make sure that they receive enough calcium in order to prevent osteoporosis and so they can provide enough calcium to their children when they are being formed.

There are many food items that contain calcium that are designed for the lactose intolerant. In addition to avoiding the food, you should always have your medication or other tools for relieving the symptoms of your intolerance issue with you in case you accidentally eat something you should have avoided.

It will be important for you to learn how to read which items are in a certain food so that you do not accidentally eat something that you should not. You may also want to ask hosts and restaurant personnel what is contained in a certain dish before you eat it.

There are many ways you can do this without being rude. In addition, it can save you a lot of discomfort.

In most cases, it is generally a good idea to avoid eating a food unless you are sure it does not contain traces of the food you are intolerant to. If you are unsure and feel it would be rude to ask about the food, try to choose the plainest, most basic food offered.
