If you workout at a public gym, you need to be sure to follow the gym rules, so that you are respectful to the other members of the club. This article describes some of the basic rules which you will be asked to follow, so that you are a pleasant person to be around while you are there.

Working out at a public gym comes with a certain set of rules, to keep everyone comfortable and to keep everything sanitary. If you want to be an upstanding member of the club you belong to, you should conform to these standards.

To begin with, a gym is a community, so sharing is required. Placing a towel on a machine does not claim ownership.

If you are doing multiple sets on a machine, it is common courtesy to let others work in during your rest periods. This may not always be practical, but offer to share whenever you can.

Make sure to put away whatever equipment you use. It is very irritating to everyone else when weights are left on the floor.

If you put weights on the bar, be sure to take them off when you are done. Leaving dumbbells, bands, exercise balls, and other equipment on the floor is a tripping hazard, and makes it difficult for other members to find and use what they need.

Do not assume that the next person is going to clean up after you-it is not their job. Also, you must make sure that you clean off the machine that you use.

Always bring a towel with you, and wipe the machines down when you are finished. There is nothing more disgusting than holding onto someone else's sweat.

If you do not want to have contact with anyone else's sweat, do not make them ensure yours. After using any type of equipment at the club, be sure to wipe it off.

Sometimes they even provide a bottle of disinfectant for you to use. Take advantage of it.

Also, use a towel to separate yourself from the machine while you make use of it. On the topic of sweat, do not forget to control your body odor.

Do yourself and others a favor, and just put a little deodorant on. You can wash it off right after, if you do not like it.

Be sure to clean the clothes that you use after every use. Take a shower after your workout, every time.

Next, when you are finished cranking out a set of dumbbell presses, lay them down like a normal person. Do not just drop them off your shoulders.

First of all, it is dangerous. You do not know if there are any feet or hands that the weight might land on.

It is also bad for both the weights and the floor. Even if the club has rubber floors, dropping the weights from great heights will eventually break down the area.

Dressing appropriately is also important. Clean T-shirts, sweatpants, athletic shorts, and sneakers will do.

Do not wear overly revealing things, or sloppy pajamas. Nobody wants to have to see your body.

One of the most obnoxious things to see at a gym is a person yapping away on their cell phone while walking on the treadmill. This is distracting and obnoxious to others, and nobody wants to you're your personal conversations.

Don't try to converse with other people who are focused on their workout. A lot of people would just rather tune out and focus when they're at the gym.

If someone is reluctant to respond to your conversation with normal social cues of interest, leave them alone. Some people just need to be left alone when they are exercising.

Competing with the person next to you is completely ridiculous. It does not make you any stronger, you only look like an idiot.

Do you really think lifting twenty pounds more than the guy next to you matters to anyone? Here is a clue-it doesn't.

Along the same lines as not talking loudly on the phone, do not make loud grunting or screaming noises when you lift weights. It is very obnoxious, and disturbing.

If you feel the need to scream, you are probably lifting too much. Last but not least, don't coach others on what they are doing.

It is none of your business, and nine times out of ten, nobody cares what your opinion or your so called expertise is. If you follow these rules, you will be much happier, as will everyone around you.
