Halitosis is the more appropriate and technical term for what is commonly known as bad breath. Anyone can experience this problem, no matter what type of care and attention they pay to their teeth and gums.

Fortunately, there are usually ways to prevent it and treat it if you do experience problems with it in your daily life. It can also be reduced by increasing the health and care that you give to your mouth.

Those who find that they have tried every treatment and still suffer from halitosis may have a chronic condition. In this event, it will be vital to pay a visit to your dentist and request information about other treatments that may help.

Bad breath may often be caused or made worse by the types of foods that you eat. Things like garlic, onions, spices, and cabbage can affect the freshness of your breath, even hours after you eat and if you have brushed properly.

Substances in foods are carried through the blood stream and, when they reach the lungs, can cause scents to travel back up the throat and into the mouth. When an individual exhales, or breaths carbon dioxide out of their lungs, this scent travels and can be unpleasant.

Digestion is another cause of halitosis, because gasses that are produced when digesting food can make their way back upward and outward in the same manner. Those who experience poor digestion and have problems like constipation and upset stomach may notice that they also have issues with offensive odors in the mouth region.

Adjusting digestive ailments may also help the gases produced during these times to be decreased and lessen bad breath. You could also try to avoid triggers of the condition in the foods that you eat.

Another problem that is very frequent with halitosis is the improper care of the mouth, teeth, and gums. If you are not brushing and flossing properly and as often as needed, it is very likely that you will have these offensive odors and tastes in this region.

Many poor scents can be caused by bacteria and their growth; this means that the bad breath you are experiencing could very easily be attributed to germs in your mouth. Killing or reducing these bacteria should help you to feel fresher and cleaner.

Decaying food particles are some of the biggest traps for bacteria. These organisms feed on it and convert the sugars deposited on the teeth to substances that then cause decay.

Brushing and flossing will prevent these particles from being able to settle for long on teeth and gums, which will keep halitosis at bay, as well as improve oral health. Medical conditions may be the reason that you are experiencing these symptoms; unfortunately, some of these problems are harder to cure than hygiene or dietary ones.

However, with the help of a dental professional or doctor you may be able to kick the issue. Diseases and infections of the mouth that have been caused by bacteria can be prevented and usually easily treated.

Other issues may call for medication or a treatment from a medical professional. Dry mouth is another oral condition that can attribute to offensive mouth odors.

It keeps individuals from being able to produce the amount of saliva that is necessary to keep the oral area hydrated. Saliva allows for proper chewing and swallowing, and if it is not functioning correctly can leave food bits behind.

Cigarette smoking can be detrimental to the health and attractiveness of breath. This is one scent that can permeate clothes and hair and have negative effects on oral health and hygiene.

It can cause periodontal disease and leave the teeth dirty and yellowed. In other words, those that have been utilizing cigarettes may want to think about their teeth and gums the next time they light up.

Improving halitosis is possible with the improved care of teeth and gums and also through the use of dentist approved mints and gums. You may also benefit from mouth rinses and washes or a water pick; once you find the root cause and the different triggers involved in your bad breath, it will be easier to find a way to fight and combat it.

Visit your dentist and voice your concerns about this issue. The quicker you decipher what the problem is and find a treatment, the faster you will be able to feel like your mouth is at its freshest and cleanest!
