Advances in the field of dentistry improve the lives of many people in this country. It can be difficult to live with missing, cracked, chipped, or yellowed teeth or other dental problems.

In past years there were not as many options. Many new dentists are receiving training in the field of cosmetic dentistry.

This field of dentistry is focused on making the mouth, teeth, gums, and, most of all, the smile look better. Procedures that can straighten crooked teeth or whiten those that are yellowed are available to help people who were once ashamed of their smiles.

Currently, the most popular procedure undergone is that of whitening the teeth. Darker teeth are a problem for many adults.

Over time, an adult's teeth darken due to changes in the substances the body uses to maintain the teeth. However, a cosmetic dentist can use gels to whiten the teeth.

These gels are kept on for a short time. Several return appointments may be required, depending on the amount of work that needs to be done.

In order to ensure a bright and sparkling whiteness, a concentrated substance will be used. The whitening agent is usually some form of peroxide.

While the improvements caused by a whitening procedure are often very noticeable, it may not be possible to remove all the stains on a patient's teeth. Some stains are too deep for only a few whitening sessions to reach them.

In addition, whitening procedures not utilizing the concentrated substances mentioned above do not work as well. However, in some cases a light source may be used to accelerate or increase the effectiveness of the substance.

A tooth that does not respond to the whitening procedure may have a veneer affixed to it. A veneer is a thin material that is tooth colored.

Veneers can also be used to correct chips in teeth. A chip can be somewhat unsightly.

Cosmetic dentists are able to remove part of the enamel on a chipped tooth which disguises the appearance of the chip. There is a danger to this procedure, however, because the sensitive layers of the tooth may be exposed.

Enamel reduction, though, can be effective in minor cases. Yet another way to improve chipped teeth, as well as crooked and cracked ones, is the procedure of contouring.

In this procedure, a dentist will engage in tooth reduction. In some cases, a laminate substance might also be affixed to improve appearances.

Contouring is a good alternative to braces when the case is a simple one. Minor dental problems, then, can be fixed with limited amounts of work.

Another way cosmetic dentists can improve the appearance of the teeth is by bonding. Gaps in between one tooth and another can be made less apparent by using a substance that, when put under a light source, hardens to a tooth.

Numerous missing teeth can be replaced by bridges. These implants are often affixed permanently inside of the mouth.

Unlike dentures, bridges cannot be removed once they are in place. Often a crown will be placed on each tooth that is on either side of the space.

Although one of the main reasons to undergo this procedure is cosmetic, there are usually also marked improvements in the speech of those who are implanted with bridges. A lisp or another speech impediment might even be rectified by the installation of a bridge.

Apart from teeth, a cosmetic dentist might also do work on the gums of a patient. A gum lift moves the gum line up somewhat so as to improve the overall appearance of the mouth.

The gum line might also be sculpted. This is done to ensure a natural, beautiful look.

Advances continue to be made in the procedures of cosmetic dentistry. If you feel that your smile is not quite what it could be, you may want to consult a cosmetic dentist.

He will be able to tell you what procedure will be able to correct whatever problem you have. Take advantage of his knowledge and years of experience.

A cosmetic dentist will help you to make the choice that is right for you. If you want to be able to smile all you want and not be shy about it, do not delay!
