It seems there are more television shows than ever before are starting to focus on the epidemic of obesity that has become such a major problem in this country today. Many of these people are persons with an addiction to food. Not only is diet and fitness a big part of the treatment, but so is learning to deal with emotions and life on life's terms. This means not using food for comfort or food as a way of dealing with the things that go on in your life.
For some people, losing weight is a matter of life or death and learning to eat in a way that is conducive to living is going to be essential. It takes realizing that you are going to have a lower quality of life and possibly a shorter life if you don't change your relationship with food. Losing weight is as much mental as it is physical.
If you are overweight and it is by less than 50 pounds, you can most likely change your diet and exercise more and you should be able to solve the problem. Many times people that are not excessively overweight have just gotten caught up in life and they may eat mindlessly. They eat without being aware of exactly what they are putting in their mouths. Once they start taking notice of what they are eating, it is not that difficult to get rid of the excess weight.
With a person that is obese, there is usually a little more to it. If a person is 100 pounds overweight, they are usually eating when they are not hungry and eating long past the point of being full. This is something that is going to need addressed. You cannot continue to eat when you are not hungry if you expect to lose weight. It is that simple, but not really. Changing this is difficult. It will take either counseling or some other type of action that involves dealing with emotions in a manner that does not involve food.
While we do need food to live, we do not have to live to eat. The medical profession has begun to realize that there is more to losing weight than just what you eat. Even traditional weight loss programs have added support in the form of forums and online communities where its members can help each other to deal with the things that arise in their lives that may cause them to eat compulsively. If you are considering a weight loss program, make sure that it offers support as well as diet and fitness education.
