Running on a treadmill can be a great way to stay in shape during the colder months of the year. Those who live in the city might also use this machine, if they don't have a place to run.

Unfortunately, the downside to running on a treadmill, instead of outside, is that the scenery and activity of the outdoors is not available to distract you. Unless you have a great imagination, you may soon become bored staring at the same display for thirty minutes or more.

Though you may have done well at staying in the healthy habit of running during the summer months, it may become immensely more difficult to remain driven when running on a treadmill every day. You may not be able to find a new way to exercise, but you can try a few things that should break up the monotony.

Listening to music, reading, watching TV or a movie, or talking with someone can greatly lessen the boredom you experience while running on a treadmill. It is up to you to discover which one works best for you.

Many people who are physically active and exercise invest in an MP3 player. These small devices are great for storing hundreds, if not thousands, of your favorite songs.

Developing a playlist that will inspire you through your work out is a good idea. Begin with some slower songs for your stretches and warm ups.

For your work out, use faster songs that keep you motivated and don't make you want to lag. Finally, switch back to some slower songs for your cool down.

The most important thing to remember about music is that it deeply impacts us. The right song can keep you going purely because it makes you feel stronger.

Go through your music, choose appropriate songs, and add them to your work out playlist. Next time you work out on your treadmill, you'll be rocking out to great exercise music.

Another great way to maintain interest during your work out is to bring a book or a magazine to read. This is certainly a great way to multitask.

Imagine how many books and magazines you could get through by reading them while working out for half an hour or more. You might just become the most well-read person in the gym.

This method may not be for everyone, however, because it may cause a little bit of motion sickness. Some may find it difficult to concentrate on words on a printed page while running due to the motion inherent in the activity.

Just give it a try and see if reading while running is for you. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Those who enjoy television and movies might try making their favorite shows or films part of their routine. Television programs usually last from about twenty to forty minutes, which, for many people, is the customary duration of their work out session.

You can watch the latest episode of a show, catch up on episodes you have missed, or relive those episodes that you love. The possibilities are many, and any of them will keep you focused while you get in shape.

One problem is that you might not be able to hear the program that well, unless you turn the volume up high, because of the noise of the machine. If you don't mind turning the TV up a little louder than usual, this method could work for you.

If you prefer human interaction to any of the above listed activities, you can talk with the person next to you. You might just make a new friend, and you will both be able to support each other during your work outs.

Having a friend to encourage you will be a great benefit. This advantage is not limited to those who work out at the gym.

If you work out at home, have a friend come over and work out with you. While you exercise, discuss whatever topic you both enjoy.

Not only will you be strengthening your bodies, but you will be strengthening your relationship. It's a great way to stay fit in all aspects of your life.

Test any or all of these methods to stay interested and focused while running on the treadmill. You can keep up the habit of getting in shape.
