There is an old legend about a fountain which gushed out water that, when imbibed by a person, would make them young again. To date, no such fountain has been found.

Despite this fact, we, as a species, have done our best to find ways to make ourselves look younger. We all want to be attractive, and youth is generally thought to be more attractive than age.

Plastic surgery has increasingly become the go to option for those who look at themselves in the mirror and see some glaring problem that must be fixed. Yet, even though plastic surgery has increased in popularity over 200% since the late 1990's, it may not be the best option for everyone.

Taking time to weigh all the consequences of plastic surgery is a good idea for anyone who is thinking about going under the knife. Be certain that the surgery you are contemplating will satisfy the need you have.

The first thing to consider is whether your expectation is even reasonable. If you are looking to completely reverse the aging process, you may want to start searching for that fountain rather than going through a costly procedure that will not make you happy in the end.

Consult with a therapist regarding your intentions. It might be that you need help becoming more comfortable with your body.

There are circumstances, though, under which plastic surgery is certainly a necessary investment. Those who find themselves competing for a job with younger looking candidates may choose to have a little cosmetic work done to make them appear more youthful.

But, what about those who are in their youth? The social world of a teenager can sometimes revolve around the issues of attractiveness.

A young woman who feels she has a large or ugly nose might benefit psychologically from going through a rhinoplasty. Changing only that one feature may alter her entire outlook on life.

At times, however, it may be that parents have negatively impacted a teenager's body image. If the teenager is not voicing concern over the supposedly offending body part, it is probably not a good idea to be considering plastic surgery to "fix it".

An operation can greatly improve the lives of those who suffer from the effects of a negative body image. However, plastic surgery cannot and should not be considered as a way to satisfy your, or anyone else's, obsessive body beliefs.

For some people, procedures can become a compulsion. No matter how successful their results are, they are still not satisfied.

Sometimes, though, there are physical as well as emotional benefits resulting from a procedure. An obese person might consider plastic surgery in order to remove body fat, not only because it is unsightly but also because the weight causes other health issues.

In such a case, plastic surgery would not only improve that person's body image, but the procedure might also save his life. It's important, though, to be certain, prior to undergoing a tummy tuck or lap-band installation, that you will be able to maintain a healthy lifestyle when the procedure is complete.

Getting a tummy tuck or having a lap-band installed does not mean that the weight will never come back. If you continue to fall into the habit of over eating and not eating nutritious foods, you can expect that those unwanted pounds will return.

Before having a weight loss procedure done, establish good habits of healthy eating. The surgeon will make sure that you have done this before allowing you to have a procedure done.

In a similar fashion, other procedures performed by plastic surgeons may be intended to have physical implications in addition to the emotional. Rhinoplasties may be designed to open an individual's airways and prevent his snoring.

Other types of these surgeries may be done to reconstruct damaged or injured body parts. Also, burn victims can greatly benefit from this kind of reconstructive surgery.

Obviously there are those who need plastic surgery to improve their health, be it physical or emotional. In these cases plastic surgery should be considered as a way to restore them to full function.

Those who use plastic surgery as a way to satiate an obsession or compulsion should seek help from a therapist who can help them to gain a better body image. Doing this will prevent them from unnecessarily undergoing an invasive and costly procedure.

Consult with a plastic surgeon and, if possible, a therapist. With their help you can decide whether plastic surgery is the right option for you.
