Celiac disease is one condition that can be pretty difficult to live with; it is an autoimmune disorder, usually inherited, that affects the lining of the intestine. This lining can become damaged when it meets with the gluten and other proteins that are found in wheat products, as well as some rye, barley, and oats.

In other words, any consumption of foods containing wheat or gluten can severely damage the digestive tract and make the individual very ill. Sometimes, patients do not even realize that they have celiac disease until their teens or early adulthood, though they may be genetically "programmed" to develop it.

However, it can develop at any life stage, including infancy. The actual cause for the disorder is unknown.

As aforementioned, celiac disease is mostly hereditary, though there have been cases noted where those who had no family history developed it. It is most prevalent in woman of European descent.

There are other diseases and health problems that have been closely associated with celiac disease, including intestinal cancer, lactose intolerance, miscarriage, osteoporosis, dermatitis, and Type 1 diabetes. Symptoms of celiac can be different for every individual; some patients have had difficulty being diagnosed because their symptoms were so similar to other illnesses.

However, the main indicators that one may be suffering from the disorder are abdominal pain, nausea, lactose intolerance, decreased appetite, unexplained weight loss, and digestion problems like diarrhea and constipation. Other symptoms may include fatigue, growth delays in children, depression, muscle cramps, malnutrition, mouth sores, bone disease, and vitamin deficiency.

Diagnosis of this disease can be vital, because it is something that affects an individual's ability to function and be comfortable from day to day. This process is usually performed through a blood test or endoscopy.

Once the individual has been diagnosed with celiac disease, they must usually make a lot of changes to their lifestyle, especially their diet. It can be very difficult to live with; a large amount of foods, especially those that are processed, contain some form or wheat or gluten.

Patients must follow a gluten free diet for the rest of their lives, to avoid discomfort, pain, and damage to the intestines. This includes reading medication and food labels very carefully to make sure that there are no products in the ingredients list that could make one sick.

The American diet makes it especially hard to remain gluten-free; most of the food in restaurants and stores has some sort of wheat flour added to it. However, knowledge of the illness has become more wide spread, and many food manufacturing companies have begun to develop products that can be safely eaten by those with celiac disease.

These products are usually more available in organic or gourmet stores, so if you are diagnosed, you may notice a change in your shopping habits. Unfortunately, having this strict diet may be costly if you are unable to find foods to eat.

Many individuals choose to create meals and snacks of vegetables, fruits, and lean meats. There are some dairy products that may also be okay to eat and not contain substances that will be harmful; however, because a majority of patients are also lactose intolerant, you will probably want to check with your doctor beforehand and make sure that you completely understand the diagnosis.

Fortunately, with celiac disease the main treatment is to adopt a gluten-free diet; most individuals do not need the help of any medications or other treatments in order to feel healthy and strong. If you follow a well-balanced menu each day that does not contain substances that your body cannot digest, you should be able to function normally and live a long and healthy life.

Children that are diagnosed may have a more difficult time if they do not understand the consequences of eating wheat-filled items. It can be difficult for youngsters to comprehend the measures that must be taken for their overall health.

If your child does have this condition, make sure that any questions they have are answered by a doctor or pediatrician. The more they understand the disease and how it affects their life, the easier it should be for them to follow the diet restrictions.

Thankfully, there is a pretty big support group of those suffering from celiac disease; performing online research may lead you to others who can offer advice and give recipes for familiar dishes that have been altered to not include wheat. It is possible for those who suffer from the illness to live a healthy and normal lifestyle, even sometimes without feeling like they have to go without their favorite food options.

Because it is uncertain what exactly causes celiac, it is unfortunately unpreventable. However, those that take on the disease with a positive outlook and alter their diet in a way that keeps them healthy but also pleases them may find that it does not impact their lives too negatively.
