Riding a bicycle is a good way to get in shape. It is also fun.

A bike ride works out the cardiovascular system, improving endurance. Additionally, many of the body's muscles become toned and strengthened as they are used to operate the bike.

A bicycle can be used on varying types of terrain. Some are designed to operate on paved roadways which are free of obstructions.

Other types are made to be used on mountain trails that have rocks, puddles, and bushes in the way. Yet another version is designed to have the benefits of both road and mountain bikes molded into one model.

Choosing which type of bicycle to use is an individual process based on preference. When considering what kind to get it is a good idea to weight each of the options.

Road bikes are made to travel on the pavement. They usually feature several gears that enable the rider to cruise along on a flat road and also to peddle his way up a hill.

Mountain bikes also require a broad range of gears because of the difficult terrain which they are often required to pass over. The requirements of the terrain type also make it necessary for this variety of bicycle to be of sturdy construction.

Because of this durable manufacturing, a mountain bike cannot go at as high a rate of speed as a road bike. This type does, however, offer a more comfortable seating arrangement.

The road design is made such that the rider hunches forward. This style can cause back pain for some riders.

It is a good idea to try out a model you are planning to purchase on a real ride. Ask a friend if you can borrow his and take it for a spin so that you know what to expect.

For those who are concerned with the issue of back pain, it is probably best to test the mountain variety. These models are designed to allow the rider to sit up straighter and be more comfortable in that regard.

There is also the option of a hybrid bicycle. This type of cycle is designed to have the comfort of the mountain models and the speed of the road models.

Be sure to make these choices, however, in the light of the knowledge of where you will be riding. If you only intend to be out on the pavement, the road or hybrid variety will be good for you.

If you are instead planning on riding up a mountain to enjoy the great outdoors, you should probably invest in a mountain model. Buying the mountain variety for use on a roadway will cause you to spend money on a bicycle that is not suited to the venue.

It is better for those who plan on riding on the road to invest in a model that is designed for that purpose. Take time to consider exactly what is that you want to do with your bicycle.

There are still other options for those who are seeking a special model. Recumbent bicycles allow the rider to sit back while peddling.

This type often features a set of peddles that is forward of the front wheel, or it may even have peddles which are operated by the hands and arms. A more comfortable, relaxing work out is almost guaranteed.

A tandem bicycle features two seats and two sets of peddles which enable two people to ride together. This can be great for a couple who are both trying to get fit.

Families who like to ride together but have small children can use pull-behind carriages. Their children can ride safely and comfortably as their parents tow them along.

It is most important to remember when choosing a bicycle to select one that will make you want to use it. This is especially critical for those who are going to ride their bikes to get fit.

Take time to consider each of the aspects of the types of bicycles. If possible, take the bike you are planning to buy out for a spin and see how you feel about it.

Purchasing the right bicycle for your needs can lead to the development of a healthy habit. You can enjoy your bike for many years to come.

If you become involved in cycling sports and events, you can use an exercise bike to get in shape during the off months. These machines are designed to simulate the motions used to peddle.
