As a nurse you will have to listen to patients and you will have to listen to doctors. While you are listening to the nurses and doctors you will have to take the time to be sure that you understand their exact instructions and concerns.
While you are listening you may not agree with what is being said. Often times it does not matter if you disagree and you have to learn to actively listen even when you feel differently about the situation.
You may also have to relay the feelings of your patient to the doctor. This means that you must take the time to understand exactly how they are feeling and relay those feelings completely to the doctor that you are working with.
Second, you should be able to follow instructions well. This may often times mean that you have to check and even re-check the instructions that are given to you to make sure that you totally understand what you are to do.
As you are following directions a simple misstep can have serious repercussions. People will trust you with their life on a day to day basis and you have to make sure that you understand how you are going to handle that stress well.
Third, you want to make sure that you really care about the well being of your patients. Some people get scared about caring so much about their patient because they feel that they should be detached so that they do not get hurt.
There is a fine balance that all nurses must find between caring and being professional. You will have to experience the death of patients and you want to make sure that you are emotionally prepared for those deaths.
You have to make sure that you are taking the time to give your patient the extra effort when he or she needs it. This extra effort can come in many different shapes and forms and will be different depending on the client that you are working with.
Observing and not being afraid to speak up is another trait that will make a good nurse. You want to make sure that you are watching what is happening to your clients and what is going on with your doctor.
You have to make sure that you are observant at all times. When you notice something that could be detrimental to the health of you patient you must take the time to talk to someone that can help you solve the problem.
There are a lot of people that do not understand how to go about finding the right balance between being observant and not overstepping your boundary. While you are taking the time to figure out this balance you should take the time to be open and honest with your superior.
Keeping a positive attitude is also very important. There are many people that are influenced by the attitude of their nurse and the more positive that you are the more positive you will be able to make your patients.
