The internet and television are constantly flooded with tips and tricks to help you achieve your weight loss goals, but we all know that there are two essentials for a healthy life: proper diet and consistent exercise.
Getting those two factors in sync with the rest of your lifestyle is the tricky part, especially when it comes to gaining the discipline and motivation necessary to make it happen. So how can you get your rear in gear? It's not easy, but these tips might give you the kick in the pants that you need.
One of the major keys is knowing when to act and when to abstain. I often tell people to dive into their workout when the thought first strikes them. If you think, "I should go to the gym today," or, "I think I want to do yoga this afternoon," just DO IT!
This is not always a viable option, as other obligations so often get in the way, but so many people wait to "work up" the motivation when the truth is that you need to just leap into it without excuse or hesitation.
Try to give yourself plenty of options so that varying modes of exercise are accessible at any given time. Keep your bicycle in good working order, keep a few aerobic DVDs and a pair of free weights in your home, and maintain your pool's cleanliness and chemical content so that you can hop right in.
Make sure that you have enough workout attire to last in between laundry runs. When you REALLY don't feel like exercising, you will reach for any excuse, and not having appropriate clothes is one I've heard many times before.
You don't want to hold back on your exercise routine, but you will want to know when to hold back at mealtime. Diet experts often recommend that you drink at least eight ounces of water when you feel hungry and then wait about ten minutes before going for a snack. This can be a particularly useful tactic in a restaurant when debating to go for an appetizer or chow down on free chips or bread.
That doesn't mean you need to deprive yourself all the time. But it does mean you should carefully evaluate your food choices. It is easy to mindlessly munch, but this is obviously unwise. Focusing on healthy hydration can get you to refocus on what you are consuming.
The quest for weight loss and healthier living is not always easy. Don't give up.
