Thyroid disease is not only something that can affect the health of one's body but also have an effect on an individual's outlook and fitness. The thyroid is a small gland that is shaped like a butterfly and found within the lower part of the human neck; it belongs to the endocrine system and is responsible for creating hormones that govern processes within the body.

It actually helps to set and monitor the metabolism, or how the body is able to gain energy from food that is ingested. There are millions of people in the United States, especially women, who are affected by thyroid disease.

Humans who suffer from this condition find that their bodies use energy either more slowly or quickly than what is normal. Hypothyroidism occurs when the gland is not active enough and does not stimulate the body to burn as much energy as it should.

This is the most common of the thyroid disorders, and can cause one to feel fatigued, gain excess weight, and have a hard time managing body heat in cold temperatures. The other type of disorder, hyperthyroidism, can cause your system to create more energy burning hormone than is necessary.

Those that have this issue will often notice weight loss, an increased heart rate, and sensitivity to heat and warm temperatures. The main hormones that are released by the thyroid are triodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).

If the levels of these substances are off, it can possibly have a negative effect on the rest of the body's ability to function properly and as it normally should. Other problems that can occur because of this gland are goiter, nodules, cancer, and thyroiditis.

Those individuals whose glands do not excrete sufficient hormones do not burn as much energy as they should and often experience weight gain. Some notice that even a fair amount of exercise cannot get them to their optimal weight or what they weighed before they began noticing issues with their thyroid.

This can be very frustrating for some, especially because it may be harder to control the levels of hormones within the body as opposed to how much fat one is or is not able to burn. Very often, an increase in pounds is not the patient's fault and cannot be fixed without proper treatment.

Patients that have the aforementioned symptoms and are worried that there may be a problem with this gland may want to pay a visit to a doctor. The sooner you get the problem in control, the easier it should be to live your normal lifestyle.

Diagnosis can be performed through a number of different tests. There are a number of different treatments that are used and performed, according to which illness you suffer from.

Thyroid cancer usually requires the use of surgery, or a thyroidectomy; depending upon the seriousness of the illness, one may have to have either all or a portion of the organ removed. The procedure is usually not complicated, and only takes about two hours on average.

If you have been taking certain medications, it will probably be necessary to inform your surgeon of them during your consultation and prior to surgery. It usually requires at least an overnight stay, but the duration of your time in the hospital will depend upon the seriousness and invasiveness of the procedure.

A large portion of patients will have to make use of thyroid medication; most of these are hormonal replacement therapies and change the chemical makeup of the body. This problem is affected by heredity; those that have a family history of thyroid disease are usually more likely to experience issues with the gland.

Unfortunately, this problem can affect individuals of almost any age. Even children and youth can suffer from one of the diseases associated with this part of the body.

Those that notice any of the symptoms should be examined by a medical professional. Once you have been diagnosed and placed on medicinal therapy, it should be easier for you to maintain your weight and bodily functions.

It will most likely be important to still follow a healthy exercise and diet routine, as well as monitoring the amount of sleep and stress that is present in your life. Being diagnosed with a thyroid disorder does not have to completely change your lifestyle; through modern medicine and help from your doctor, you should be able to live a long and healthy life!
