If you are considering STD testing, you may be nervous or unsure of where to start. You may have many questions. Perhaps you wonder where you can get the tests done, and what exactly you will be tested for. There may be fears about what you find out or fears that the tests will be painful or embarrassing. Let's take a look at some of these concerns.

STD testing can be performed at your physician's office. If you are a woman, you may annually see your gynecologist, who will be happy to order testing for you. Many people are uninsured or would feel uncomfortable going to their regular physician for this sensitive subject matter. If that is the case, many communities have clinics that are confidential, and charge low fees based on your ability to pay.

There are various tests that can look for different conditions. If you are having symptoms, your care provider will know best which infections to look for. If you don't have symptoms, they will ask about your sexual practices and situation to best determine what to look for. You may also request certain tests if there's something you're concerned about. It's important to be honest so you can receive the best care possible.

Testing for STDs is usually painless. The exact test will depend on what infection you're being tested for. Some infections require a physical exam where the provider examines your genital area for any obvious symptoms such as sores or rashes. The doctor may take a swab of the area for a culture. You might also have to have a small bit of blood drawn. Finally, urine tests can be used to find some infections.

Depending on the test performed, the time it takes to get results varies. Some conditions can be detected immediately upon examination, while others can take a few weeks. Regardless of the infection you have you will need a follow up visit to obtain treatment or to see if the condition is cleared up. You may even receive counseling on what to do next or to help you resolve any emotional difficulties relating to your diagnosis.
