It shows consideration, good sense, and legally important, so in most situations std testing isn't an option it's a given. Std is the acronym for sexually transmitted diseases. The list is long, the side effects even longer. Forty percent of marriages end, dating sites are prolific and prostitution though not usually legal, is a service quite readily available, so that leaves a few million people out there who are possibly with new, semi-permanent or one-night partners.
Those who lived through the "sexual revolution" of the 60's and early 70's were not threatened by HIV or AIDs. The disease was only recognized in approximately 1976 and the cases have multiplied horrifically since. More than one person has been charged with knowingly having unprotected sexual relations without revealing their condition. The cost of the sentencing far exceeds the cost of a package of condoms.
Syphilis has been long described in history books as a condition that drove the victims mad. Gonorrhea, also known as "the clap" is not uncommon, but both are easily treated with antibiotics. Unfortunately, many people, particularly women, have no symptoms of some stds. Testing is easy, and in many situations, free, and preventable.
Lice (or "Crabs" )and Genital Herpes appear to be external. Lice can be quickly treated with a liquid available from the pharmacist. Herpes is more difficult to treat. The condition can go dormant for extended periods but then reappear when the body is stressed by another condition or just plain stressed. There is no known cure. Babies born vaginally can be infected when passing through the birth canal. Some doctors will recommend a C-section if there is an outbreak at the time of labor.
Asking a new partner to be tested should not be considered a slur on their reputation, and both parties should see their doctors. People who have been strictly monogamous in a now crashed but long term marriage are unlikely to be carrying a std. Those individuals who have been out "fishing" for a date or more, may be carriers. Condoms are excellent barriers to disease for standard intercourse. Oral sex offers other difficulties. But Grandma always said that std testing would be unnecessary if everyone had a pillow between their knees.
