Because of the growing awareness of the negative side effects of both over-the-counter and prescription pain killers, people are seeking out alternative and, preferably, natural ways to battle pain.

One such method entails a psychological approach while another method is the natural approach. It is well-established that pain is a sensation which means that the brain is partly responsible for its creation. With that knowledge, it is reasonable to conclude that the brain may be used to control pain as well. Recently, the psychological approach to pain management treatment has gained popularity and acceptance in pain management centers. There has also been an increasing trend in the demand for natural pain killers.

One of the more popular alternative treatments for pain is music. Numerous studies show that music soothes and heals not only the soul but the body as well. By soothing the brain, the sensation of pain is soothed as well. According to one experiment, listening to music can reduce pain by up to about 20 percent. In another research, music was successfully used to regulate high blood pressure and to treat sleeping disorders. Music has also been used in post operative pain management, in reducing pain during labor or childbirth, and in relieving muscle and joint pains. Though there are no conclusive or clear-cut application of music as treatment for pain, it wouldn't hurt at all to try it out. There is no side effect or overdose since no one ever gets hurt from listening to music too much. If it does nothing for your physical pain, all is not lost. At the very least, all that music would have soothed your soul.

Another alternative substitute for pain medication is hypnotherapy or hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is aimed at making a person go into a deeply relaxed state, making him oblivious to all other sensations including pain. Research shows that hypnotherapy treats and gives relief to several ailments including asthma and greatly improves the body's immune system. Though it is unlikely that hypnotherapy will achieve acceptance as a substitute for anesthesia in surgery, its use in chronic pain management is becoming a widely-accepted alternative in pain management centers. Hypnotherapy is again based on the premise that pain can be controlled by the brain. Pain signals are reduced or completely ignored by a person when in a hypnotic state.

People have always heard about the benefits given by Omega-3 fatty acids which can be predominantly found in fish like tuna, herring and sardine. It is common knowledge that Omega-3 fatty acids do wonders for the heart and cholesterol levels but that is not the only benefit that they provide. Omega-3 fatty acids are also known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Research shows that a dose of Omega-3 fatty acids can help ease pain from inflamed muscles or cramps. No one should think twice about using Omega-3 fatty acids as a remedy for cramps. Even if they do not succeed in getting rid of the pain, they would have succeeded in lowering cholesterol level and making the heart healthier.
