As opposed to traditional forms of western medicine, there are a great many individuals who choose to utilize complementary and alternative medicine, or CAM, in search of health and relief from their ailments. The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) of 2007 reported that over thirty percent of American adults choose to use this form of medical care.

The field of CAM itself is very broad and includes a number of different branches and types. The term describes the overall systems and practices that are performed in this category; all of these systems are different from what one would usually consider conventional or traditional medicine.

With western or allopathic types, individuals that want to practice must hold an M.D. (medical doctor) or D.O. (doctor of osteopathy) degree. Other professionals in this branch include psychologists, registered nurses, and physical therapists.

Complementary medicine does make use of these traditional methods, but also mixes in other forms like acupuncture for additional health. Alternative medicinal methods make use of other treatments in place of the allopathic type.

CAM medicine utilizes different herbs as supplements and medication; they can be vitamins, minerals, plant derivatives, or other substances. They are usually referred to as botanicals, and usually replace traditional or prescription medication or drugs.

Probiotics are another treatment that is used medicinally; these are live cultures or bacteria which can possibly benefit the human digestive tract, as well as other parts of the body. These microorganisms are often found in foods like yogurt and can be ingested in the hopes that they will repair systems or increase bodily health.

Any of these types that are ingested are microorganisms that are already found within the body, so they should not be harmful to the individual that chooses to ingest them. It is probably a good idea for all patients to consult a physician or professional before making use of probiotics, just in case they were to have alternate reactions to them than were intended.

One branch of CAM is mind-body medicine; there are many who believe that healing the stresses and worries of the mind can have a positive effect on the rest of the body, as well as a number of systems that govern human health. Mind and body practices include things like yoga, acupuncture, meditation, deep breathing, hypnotherapy, and tai chi.

These healing methods stem from both Chinese and Ayurvedic practices dating back more than two thousand years. It is commonly believed among these branches that the health of the mind has the power to control the rest of the body.

Those that are interested in this practice can become involved in a yoga or tai chi class. These methods are not guaranteed to "work" or completely change existing problems, but there are many who feel that they alter stresses and anxieties present in their minds and relax the rest of their systems.

Another branch of complementary and alternative medicine is the chapter that focuses on body-based treatments and manipulation. This traditionally includes therapeutic massage and spinal manipulation.

Through adjusting bone alignment and rubbing or pressing on muscles and pressure points, many believe that injuries and some illnesses can become alleviated. These are used most often in situations of lower back pain and debilitating injuries that occurred in sports or accidents.

Many feel that this method improves their pain, mobility, and tension; however, it is something that one must try and experience for themselves before they can decide whether or not it is right for them. Chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation lies within the top ten most popular CAM treatments among American adults and children.

Though this method is not guaranteed to give relief, many find adjustments and massages to be very relaxing and pleasurable experiences. If anything, they can possibly help to mentally and physically relax patients or clients.

Movement therapies, including Pilates, may also be recommended to those who have experienced injuries, have chronic pain, or who hope to increase their mobility and strength. This method focuses on improving muscle strength and mass within the body to possibly protect it from future pain.

Energy fields are also included in this branch, meaning that magnets and lights are utilized in an attempt to adjust or improve the body's natural electromagnetic fields. There is no way to determine whether or not this practice is sure to improve ailments, but many are willing to test them out in an attempt to find alternate practices other than traditional medication.

One must always be careful when approaching different methods and ways to heal bodily ailments; not everything will be beneficial or give you a cure. You may end up spending a large part of your healthcare budget on something that does not in any way change how you feel.

The best advice one could give is to perform extensive research before you request help from a complementary or alternative medicine professional. That way, it may be easier to make an informed decision on what types of treatments are best for you.
