There are ways to dress that accentuate the positive and other ways that highlight your less desirable features. As a man, if you are overweight, there are clothes that you can choose to make yourself not look so fat. First of all you must avoid horizontal stripes at all costs, especially if they are wide stripes.

Anything that goes around your waist should also be thin such as a dress belt if you are wearing a shirt that is tucked into your pants. You want to create the illusion of being more aligned vertically so you can use thin stripes that go up and down to help create the feeling of being a bit taller. You also want to avoid wearing any tight fitting clothes and go for clothes that are slightly oversized so that you look smaller when wearing them. For casual wear you can use a large or extra large shirt that is left tucked out of your pants so that the shirttail hangs down outside of our pants.

For this shirt, be sure to wear the kind that is squarely finished on the bottom which are made to be worn outside of the pants. For dress shirts make sure you have collars that are loose fitting even when buttoned and when the shirt is worn with a tie. The last think you want to look like is a guy in a shirt choking himself to death.

If there is a problem with excessive sweating a loose fitting shirt with help and wearing darker colors will show less underarm stains. It is best if the pants are a bit oversized as well and straight leg pants will look better on a large man that pants with narrow or wide legs. In the choice of shoes, try to avoid the clunky look and wear shoes that are of a slimmer design.

If you are seriously overweight, it is also time to get more exercise. If you find motivation is a problem, hire a personal trainer and then make appointments for your exercise regime that you keep on a regular basis. Many people have lost quite a few pounds by simply getting the help they need from another person to guide them in their exercise program and help keep them motivated.

Be sure to consult with your doctor if you have a serious weight problem in order to make sure your exercise program is appropriate for the conditions of your health. There are also procedures that can help you permanently shed pounds such as the lap band.

Again consult a doctor and it is also a good idea to get a second opinion when considering any serious medical procedure. No matter what your body size is, you need to have a feeling of comfort with who you are and not take being overweight as being a complete disaster, just something that you are working on changing if that is your goal.
Another way to create the illusion of being thinner is, as the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield said, "Hang around with people fatter than you are."
