You may have heard of cosmetic dentistry in the past. There are a lot of people that hear the term thrown around but do not totally understand what cosmetic dentistry entails and because of their lack of understanding they do not know how to utilize this type of dentistry.
There are many people that could benefit from the use of cosmetic dentistry. If you are unhappy with something about your smile or your mouth you may want to look into cosmetic dentistry to see if there is a procedure that can help you be more confident with your mouth.
The most common procedure that patients come in asking for is having veneers put on. When you are not happy about your smile you want to talk to your dentist about what veneers could do to improve your smile.
Many years ago the stars in Hollywood would have no problem having their teeth removed and getting dentures. Their dentures would give them the smile that they wanted but the process would be very time consuming and very drastic.
When you want to change your smile you do not need to have teeth extracted and dentures put in. Instead, you can have one of the porcelain caps put on your teeth to correct a wide variety of problems.
These veneers can correct problems with color, shape, size or even gaps in your teeth. If you have a crooked smile but you do not want to go through the whole process of getting braces you can easily get yourself some veneers instead.
This process may be expensive for many people and there are not many dental insurance plans that will cover this expense. If it is important to you, take the time to work with your doctor on a payment plan so that you can have the smile that you need.
A less drastic procedure that you can have done to improve your smile is having your teeth whitened. There are a lot of people that brush their teeth on a daily basis but are just not able to see the results that they want.
When you are doing everything that you can for your teeth at home and they are still discolored, talk to your dentist about getting them whitened. The dentist will use a peroxide-based cleaner that will do a much better job at whitening your teeth than your toothbrush will do.
Sometimes, you may have to have your gums protected and there are some cleaners that do not require this. There are some dentists that will give you an at-home procedure and others that will want you to do it in the dentist's office.
You should make sure that you are taking the time to follow the dentist's directions exactly if you are going to whiten your teeth at home. There may be some serious injuries that result in not following the directions of the dentist exactly.
Third, if you find that you are not happy with the shape of your tooth you can have your tooth reshaped. There are many dentists that will do this instead of giving veneers because the process can be completed quickly.
This process will usually last no more than thirty minutes and you will leave with a smile that you are more confident about. The shaping will require the dentist to remove a small portion of your tooth to make it look the way that it should.
After having your tooth reshaped you may start to have problems with sensitivity. If this occurs make sure that you talk to your doctor as soon as you can afterwards so that you can remedy the sensitivity as quickly as possible.
You should also make sure that you understand how you are going to deal with problems with your gums. When you have a receding gum line it may require you to have surgery on your gums to make them look the way they should.
Some people only require braces to make their smile what they want it to be. When you get braces you should follow the doctor's orders precisely so that the braces are capable of doing the job that they need to do.
Cosmetic dentistry is a great way to boost your confidence in your smile. Take the time to do your research and understand if cosmetic dentistry is the type of dentistry that you need to make your smile what you have always wanted it to be.
