We all know how important it is to take care of ourselves with a balanced diet, consistent exercise, and regular checkups with the doctor and dentist. But we all have so many obligations that it can be difficult to put ourselves as our first priority, meaning our overall health suffers.

Is there a way to multitask so you can find equilibrium with all of the responsibilities that demand our time? It's never easy, and you do have to occasionally make sacrifices, but these tips might help.

Technology, technology, technology. Having a smart phone or a "netbook"--a small, portable laptop that is great for business purposes--makes it easy to handle work e-mails and work on spreadsheets and projects on the go. It would be helpful to pay for internet access on the go so you don't have to worry about searching for a wireless signal.

That is not an excuse to always be preoccupied by your phone or computer, however. You need to know when to take a break, especially to keep your personal relationships from suffering. But being able to stay in touch with what's going on at work when you need to take a brief break--like for a dentist appointment--helps you and your boss have more peace of mind and makes it less likely that you'll fall behind.

In the same vein, choosing healthcare providers that use the latest and greatest technology can keep you from wasting time. For example, my Houston, Texas dentist has the means to allow me to see my x-rays immediately, so I don't have to spend any excess time waiting around in the office. Plus, a quick and efficient staff gets me in and out quickly. A few Saturday hours each month enable me to avoid missing work for my appointments.

It might seem counterintuitive, but working preventative care into your busy life is going to be much better for you in the long run. Your life will most likely be more disrupted by an emergency than it will be by routine appointments and treatments that stay ahead of the game. Compare in your mind a brief checkup and a root canal, plus recovery time. Yikes!

Bunching together your errands is vital to saving some time, and we all know extra time is vital to getting things done. Choosing a doctor's and dentist's office that is convenient to home and/or work is key, but grouping together trips to the dry cleaners, post office, and pet store will also pare off wasted time. Having a GPS device is extremely helpful in making travel a bit more efficient.

Remember how important it is to take care of yourself. It can be stressful to sacrifice other important tasks to do so, but you have got to be willing to make yourself the first priority.
