Going under for oral surgery is, not surprisingly, something that many individuals want to have to do. Having one's wisdom teeth taken out can be quite an undertaking, but it is often very necessary.

The wisdom teeth are the molars that are furthest to the back of the mouth; if they do erupt, it is usually not until the individual is a young adult between ages seventeen and twenty-one. Many find that these teeth never do erupt from the gums, but this does not always mean that they do not have to be removed.

Human beings' mouths are generally sized to fit twenty-eight teeth comfortably without causing any problems or throwing out the alignment of their teeth. However, this becomes a problem when the four molars in the back try to grow in, bringing the total number of teeth present in the mouth to thirty-two.

When this happens, it may cause a number of different problems, some of which that can be detrimental to overall gum and oral health. By the time that these molars grow in, there is usually little room left for them, because the others have developed and taken up space in the gums.

Because they are crammed in or not able to fit properly, this can cause a number of different hygienic issues within the mouth. When does an individual know whether or not these need to be removed?

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to discern by yourself, but you can definitely pay a visit to your dentist and allow them to decide. Sometimes it will be very obvious to you that you must undergo surgery, especially because of infection or growth patterns.

There are a number of different conditions that will call for you to pay a visit to your dentist or surgeon and have wisdom teeth removed. One of the most common occurrences is eruption into an abnormal pattern, like sideways or twisted.

Because of the pressure that is created from the other teeth, these molars tend to grow in awkwardly or in a manner that is not conducive to oral health. If they have come in at a strange or worrisome angle, it is possible that they will need to be taken out.

Sometimes, wisdom teeth do not even grow in or break through the gums because of a lack of space. In this case, they get trapped beneath the gum line. When food gets trapped in this area or bacteria are able to multiply and grow, you may even experience an infection.

Known as pericoronitis, this can be very painful and dangerous to oral health if left unattended or untreated. Most individuals will notice this type of condition because of the discomfort that they feel, so if you are experiencing anything like this, make sure to see your dentist immediately.

Another reason for removal of the molars is when they throw off the alignment of the jaw. If they are taking up space in an area that they may not used to, it can be difficult to form a correct bite.

Because of this, the jaw tries to compensate for the new growth and, in turn, changes the usual bite pattern that the person may be used to. Very often when they do erupt, wisdom teeth are not able to be reached by a toothbrush and do not get the proper hygiene that they need to stay healthy and clean.

In this case, they often develop plaque and decay; when this occurs, it is best to take them out altogether. As aforementioned, you may or may not be able to tell when one of these situations has occurred.

Most dentists recommend that you have this surgery performed in young adulthood, even if you have not experienced infection or a certain degree or trouble or discomfort. It is usually performed as a preventative method because, as individuals age, removing the wisdom teeth becomes more and more invasive and difficult.

Some do not develop them in the same manner that is common, such as only having two or three as compared to four. Really the only way that a person can determine what must be done with the third molars is to have them x-rayed and examined by a dentist.

Staying on top of your oral care and health is extremely important, so always be sure to follow proper hygiene. Visit your oral health professional at least once a year!
