As much as I love the mild spring weather trademark of the region in which I live, I know that its approach also indicates the beginning of a seemingly endless stream of allergy attacks, making me afraid to step outside.

If you suffer from outdoor allergies, then you know exactly what I mean. Within minutes of stepping out the door, your eyes are streaming. It's enough to make you dread that otherwise pleasant weather. If you are plagued by this issue, then you might wonder how to manage better. These tips might be useful.

To prevent the effects of mild outdoor allergies, it would be wise to take an over-the-counter treatment before you walk out the door in the morning. Those of us on a birth control pill know how important it is to be consistent and remind yourself by placing it by your toothbrush or using another trick to keep on top of it.

Some antihistamines are known to make you drowsy, so experiment with different medications when you DON'T have to drive in order to find one that will be safe and effective for you. If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, do consult with your doctor before taking any medicine, even if it is only OTC.

Swelling in the nasal passages is part of what causes a runny nose, one of the major outward signs of an allergy attack. It may be useful to take some ibuprofen gel capsules (they work faster than traditional pills) in order to reduce swelling and inflammation in the nose and sinuses.

Applying ice to aggravated eyelids can keep them from swelling shut, though if you are still exposed to the allergen, the swelling will resume as soon as the ice is taken away, so do move away from the offending substance as quickly as possible.

Keep an allergy kit in your car or purse. This should include a small bottle of eye drops, face wipes (to clean up makeup that may be smudged), the above mentioned medications, and a spare inhaler if you have asthma inflamed by allergies. The ladies might even want to include some cosmetic essentials to perform a touchup if necessary.

For most people, mild allergy attacks are a mere annoyance that can be dealt with relatively easily. However, if this is starting to interfere with your daily life, then it's time to make an appointment with an allergist, who can directly pinpoint what is bothering you and then formulate the best approach to manage your allergies. You don't have to live with the discomfort from serious allergies, so make the call today.
