Many Americans live a fairly sedentary life style. At work, we sit at computers, typing for hours on end.
Employers do not often allow their employees to take exercise breaks during the day, demanding efficiency and productivity. When we go home, we mostly just want to relax, which for many people involves sitting in front of the television.
In addition, preparing a quality, nutritious meal takes time. Cooking foods that are good for you does require a bit more effort than popping that TV dinner in the microwave.
Many people decide to do that which is easier-cooking up some macaroni and cheese from a box. While these types of food do have some nutritional value, consuming them for every meal is not the best idea.
Yet, with our busy schedules, it is so much easier to just keep eating that way. Over time, these unhealthy habits can lead to an increase in body weight.
Quite understandably, obesity has become one of the major health problems in America. About one-third of the population is overweight.
Many of those who suffer from obesity wish to do something about their condition. However, they may look in the mirror and feel depressed, believing that they will never be able to lose the weight and keep it off.
The best way to lose weight, though, is exercise. Physical activity causes the body to burn calories and, eventually, fat.
Observance of proper nutrition while trying to lose weight will aid in the process. In addition, exercise improves the overall health of the body.
Obesity can cause other conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart problems. As one exercises and loses weight, these factors are reduced and often eliminated.
Sometimes, though, a person may not be able to effectively lose weight through exercise. In such cases, a person may be considered as a candidate for weight loss surgery.
One of the most common procedures which are conducted to remove excess weight is liposuction. During the procedure a tube-like suction device is inserted into the area where fat has accumulated.
The device is then used to remove the fat cells. Sometimes, a solution that breaks down the fat will be injected into the area in order to make the procedure go more smoothly.
Liposuction can help people who have a little extra flab here or there. It should not, however, be considered as a radical weight loss procedure.
The procedure can be used, though, to remove fat from the stomach, buttocks, breasts, thighs, hips, and chin. Again, liposuction can remove about 10 or 15 pounds, but usually no more than that.
In order to be considered for the procedure, an individual should be a legal adult and in good health. The person should also have persistent fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise.
There are some possible risks involved with the procedure. If the surgeon removes too much fat from the area, the skin may become lumpy.
In such a case, more surgery would be required to remove excess skin. Other complications might come about due to the trauma experienced in the area where the fat deposit was located.
Liposuction, like many surgeries, is a fairly violent procedure. Blood in the area may form a clot, putting the patient's life at risk.
For those who have a great deal of weight which they wish to lose, there are other procedures available. Adjustable gastric bands can be installed around the stomachs of some patients.
These bands can be used to decrease the size of the stomach. The procedure allows a patient to feel full after eating less food than he or she normally does.
Another possible procedure is that of gastric bypass. Much of the stomach is bypassed during the procedure, linking a small section of it directly to the small intestine.
The remaining small pouch is filled much more quickly than the entire stomach. The procedure thus decreases the amount of food that a patient is able to eat.
However, both of these procedures are very radical in nature, and a plastic surgeon will not even consider them for a person who is not a good candidate. An individual should prove that he or she can maintain a healthy lifestyle before undergoing this procedure.
