With the economy in a downturn and the uncertainty of many careers, a great number of individuals unfortunately find themselves being let go from their jobs. Not only can this be frightening because of the uncertainty of where your next check will be coming from, it is also frightening because of a loss of benefits.

Medical care is extremely important, especially to those that have families; not only is it likely that you or your children will get sick and need to visit the doctor but you must also keep yourself healthy and safe to avoid leaving them without someone to care for them. It can be very shameful and personally trying when you lose your job, especially if you are the breadwinner of your family.

However, there are still ways that you can at least provide medical care for them until you are able to secure employment once more. If your employer health plan was the way that you provided medical care to your family, then you may be left to your own devices after you have been let go.

This can be especially frightening when you or one of your family members suffers from a chronic illness that needs medical care and treatment frequently. There are other measures that you can take to give those you love security until you are provided health benefits once more.

During the period that you are unemployed, you should still try and find some kind of medical coverage, just in case of emergencies. Leaving your family without care and subject to accidents is never a good idea.

If you do not have health care, you will get stuck paying for all of your medical bills should someone need to pay a visit to the doctor or hospital. When you are already in a tight spot because of a lack of job, this is probably impossible.

When you are laid off, you fortunately have a fair amount of options to maintain coverage and stay cared for. If your spouse or domestic partner is employed and has benefits, it may be best to receive coverage through their provider.

Many companies allow the spouses of their employers to join in on their plan for a minimal fee. When it comes to this situation, it is best to do a good amount of research beforehand, just in case there are strings attached or parts of the contract that you are not comfortable with.

A large majority even have immediate enrollment clauses that cover you immediately, instead of waiting for a specific period or time span. Another way that you may be able to have medical care even after you have been let go is through the use of COBRA.

Companies that have twenty or more employees are required through federal law to extend coverage for at least eighteen months after the fact. This means that, even though you are not able to bring in an income from that business, you can still utilize the benefits of having insurance.

When you are laid off, it is necessary for your employer to notify you of the rights that you have through COBRA. From that date, you have sixty days to become enrolled in the plan and make use of it.

Unfortunately, when a company goes out of business or filed for bankruptcy and you, in turn, lost your employment, COBRA is not available as an option. When you sign up for this plan, you are not guaranteed to have the same coverage that you experienced before.

However, it should be similar to your old plan and will still be able to sustain you and your family through this difficult time of unemployment. Unfortunately, COBRA may be quite expensive for some, and many find that they are not able to fit it into the budget of their unemployment check.

Those that do not want to make use of this option also have the ability to sign up for a private health insurance plan. This will require the use of an insurance agent through an insurance company, and they will be able to help you find the best plan for you.

Make sure to shop around beforehand and that you are not spending too much on your care; you want to be covered, but not have to go into debt to do so. All of these options are available when you lose your job, so be sure to do plenty of research and find the best method for you and your family.
