When the seasons change people tend to get hit with some kind of illness, and it spreads fast through the community. These are difficult to escape, but there are some preventative measures that you can take to decrease your likelihood of contracting a contagious illness.
The colder weather gives ample opportunities to catch the cold or flu because people are all adjusting to the cold, they are huddling inside close to others, and everyone is breathing on everyone else. The exposure to so many different things at once weakens your immune system and leaves your illness defenses down.
The increased amount of time spent inside with other people creates a warm environment that breeds germs. These can spread easily and rapidly once you start shaking hands or even brushing by and breathing on others.
In order to help prevent catching any kind of sickness, you should work on strengthening your immune system. There are many different ways you can build up your defenses so that you do not contract some kind of virus from others.
The first step is something that you learned growing up, and it is as true now as it was then. You need to wash your hands regularly with soap, hot water, and friction.
You should be doing this several times a day, like after you use the restroom, before and after you eat, after you shake people's hands, after you touch things like public door handles, etc., etc. Germs are spread so rapidly because everyone has germs on their hands and they start touching other people or other things that other people touch often.
By washing your hands with soap and hot water, you can help kill some of the germs that are present on your hands. If you do not have a sink with you, like after you get off of the subway, then you can carry around hand sanitizer and use it often.
Hand sanitizer with alcohol is supposed to kill 99.9 percent of germs, which will greatly reduce your chances of spreading germs amongst the people you come in contact with. You should also you disinfectant sprays and wipes to sanitize the things you touch often.
The keyboard and mouse on your computer probably have thousands, if not millions, of germs on them because of the continued use day after day. Spraying these down with disinfectant spray will help kill germs so that you can feel safe when you get to work each day.
You should also wipe down your desk occasionally to kill any bacteria that may be festering on the surface. If you think about it, papers from other people land on your desk all the time, people sit on the desk; run their hands across it, etc., so make sure you sanitize it often.
In addition to making sure your self and your surroundings are sanitized, you need to be careful what you put into your body. Make sure you take in a sufficient amount of vitamins to keep your body strong and ready to fight against viruses.
The nutrients in good foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are taken in by your blood stream and are dispersed throughout to keep your body strong and healthy. White blood cells can then take these nutrients to improve the function of your immune system.
Make sure you get a good amount of fiber through whole grains, oatmeal, or supplements. If you are not the biggest fan of fruit and vegetables, try to make a fruit smoothie for breakfast or for an afternoon snack.
These are sweet and tasty and provide the body with the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and keep up the defenses against those pesky winter flus. You can also make sure that you drink the right things to help you out.
Drinks like tea and orange juice are great for anti-oxidants and vitamins. Tea is also good to sooth sore throats and coughing fits, and the warm drink feels great during the winter months.
The final bit of advice is kind of a no-brainer, but many people, especially men, tend to ignore it. If it is cold outside you need to wear a coat.
You are not invincible, and the human body is not designed to withstand extreme elements. You need to keep warm so as to not shock your body into an illness.
