Sleeping With Allergies---3 Ways to Rest Well Despite Airborne Allergies

If you suffer with airborne allergies you know each day can be a challenge. But trying to sleep despite sneezing, coughing, post nasal drip and other irritating symptoms can result in night after night passing you by without ever feeling truly rested. Here are 3 ways you can get to sleep despite allergies that are triggered by airborne irritants.

Cover Up---One of the most common allergy triggers is the dust mite. These invisible bugs are typically found in huge numbers in---you guessed it---bedrooms.

They feed on dead skin cells which are constantly flaking off on and under the covers. They thrive in warm moist places, and sensitivity to the protein in their feces is what triggers allergic reactions such as congestion, puffy and watery eyes, sneezing and coughing.

You can reduce their numbers by covering your mattress and pillows with dust mite covers. These prevent them from taking up residence and producing more mites.

In addition to these protective covers, washing your linens once a week in hot water that is 140 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer will kill the mites. Set your hot water heater so that when you call for hot water, that is the temperature that you get. Be mindful of this if there are small children in the house.

A more natural way to kill the mites is to fold back the covers for a while before making the bed each day. Dust mites are killed by sunlight. So let the sun shine in.

Keep It Closed---If your allergies are triggered by seasonal irritants such as pollen and mold, making the bedroom as free of those as possible is a must. Keep windows closed. If possible, take off clothing that has been worn outside and leave it outside the bedroom to prevent these irritants from getting in.

Another great way to minimize these irritants inside is to launder your clothes as soon as you take them off or at least put them in the washer so the spores cannot re-enter indoor air. Not doing this means taking off clothes that have spores on them and putting them on your bed or on the floor in the bedroom.

Having the spores this close to where you sleep is inviting trouble. Washing clothes so quickly and so often may seem like a pain at first, but it's a cheap way to make the bedroom a cleaner space.

Clear the Air---Airborne triggers are constantly being sent into the air, and there's nothing that can be done to stop it. But what you can do is even the playing field by filtering out the triggers as fast as they come in.

To do this you will need a high efficiency particle arresting (or HEPA) purifier working for you in your bedroom that can remove mites, pet dander, pollen and mold spores, dust, and the myriad of other particles that trigger allergies.

HEPA filtration is the same technology that is used in hospitals to keep the air clean. Having this type of cleaning going on in your bedroom 24 hours a day with insure that you get a good night's sleep every night.
