If you want to ensure that you are going to be as healthy as possible, it is very important that you take care of your mouth. Many people would be very surprised to know that their mouth so dramatically can affect your overall health in so many ways.

Take care of your teeth and gums can prevent you lots of grief, and very high bills down the line. It is very important that you see your dentist regularly for cleanings, but you can do many things yourself too, every day.

Believe it or not, recent studies have linked heart attacks and strokes to gum disease, resulting from poor oral hygiene. As you can see, there are many serious side effects to neglecting your mouth!

One of the ones that will affect even your social life is chronic bad breathe. Bad breathe, also known as halitosis, is caused by poor oral hygiene.

If you have ever been around anyone who suffered from this issue, that should be motivation enough to not let this happen to you. In addition, one of the most obvious reasons to practice good oral hygiene is to prevent cavities.

If you want to protect the surface of your enamel, your dental hygienist can remove most tobacco, coffee, and tea stains. During your cleaning, your hygienist will also polish your teeth to a beautiful shine.

Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-medium brush. It is usually advised that you should use a toothpaste that contains fluoride, as fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay.

Spend at least two minutes brushing, covering all areas. Pay particular attention to where the teeth meet the gums, as food and bacteria often gets trapped here.

Get a new toothbrush every three to four months, or when bristles become out of shape, whichever is earlier. Look for them to start bending outward-this is your sign to go pick up a new one.

Floss your teeth at least once a day after brushing, and preferably twice a day. Dental floss helps clean between the spaces, and will help to get all of the tiny little bits of food that your brush can't reach.

If you are not sure how to floss, then ask your dentist. They can give you the tips and tricks you need to be successful.

Use a piece of floss about eight inches long, which you can pull between each space. Wrap the ends around the middle fingers of each hand.

Gently scrape the floss against the sides of each tooth from the gum outwards. This will clean the narrow spaces between, which toothbrushes cannot reach.

The gums may bleed a little when you first begin to floss. This should settle within a few days.

However, if it persists then see a dentist. It could be a more serious indication of gum disease.

To prevent this painful and serious disease, visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings, as mentioned previously. Try to eat nutritious food, such as vegetables and fresh fruits.

In particular, you should limit the amount of sugary foods and drinks that you have. Also, remember fruit juices are more erosive than whole fruits.

Try to avoid soft drinks at all costs. These will destroy enamel faster than almost anything at all.

Use an antimicrobial mouth rinse. Antimicrobial mouth rinses can help prevent gingivitis.

Quit smoking and do not use any tobacco products; they can increase your risk of gum disease, and cancer of the mouth and throat. This is something to be avoided at all costs, as it can kill you slowly and painfully.

Some fruits such as strawberries are excellent tooth whiteners. Strawberries can be rubbed on the surface of the enamel, or mashed up in a paste and brushed on.

Leave on the teeth for five minutes, and then rinse it off thoroughly. It sounds strange, but it can be effective.

Eating sweetened cereals dry is bad for teeth, so be sure to always add milk. Do not chew on hard objects that could crack a tooth, such as ice, pens, etc.

Brush or scrape your tongue daily to help remove bacteria. If you are very careful to do all of these things, you may find that your mouth stays much cleaner and healthier, which equals a happier you.
