Every New Year, countless people make a resolution to exercise and lose weight. They dream of getting into shape and obtaining the perfect body.

Gym memberships are purchased, exercise routines are created, and home exercise machines are bought. All of this is done in an effort to reach those goals of physical well-being.

These fitness regimens are often strictly adhered to for at least several weeks, maybe even more. Eventually, though, the will of most people begins to slacken and their dreams of having a perfect body are not realized.

One problem that some may encounter during their battle is that of not paying enough attention to nutrition. There is a saying that states: "You are what you eat."

Certainly you won't turn into a carton of ice cream if you eat too much of it, but, when the time for resolutions comes around, you may find it difficult to give ice cream up, or at least decrease the amount you consume.

Eating right in order to get into shape takes a great deal of will power. You have to overcome the desire to continue to eat the way you did before you made your commitment to be healthier.

Rather than eating large meals and snacking in between, nutritionists say that you should eat smaller meals on an average of about 5 or 6 times during the day. Eating in this manner will keep you from getting hungry in between meals, and this method has also been shown to speed up the metabolism of the human body.

If you are really trying to get in shape, it is important to exercise, whether it is on an elliptical machine, running, or any type of work out. Proper nutrition combined with exercise will get you into the best shape in which you have ever been.

Part of what you must do is take special note of what you are eating. It may be helpful to write the information down in a journal format.

By paying attention to what you eat you can see whether what you're eating is helping or hindering you. Certain foods are rich in the nutrients your body needs to build muscle and lose weight.

Having a pre-work out meal composed of pastas, breads, and fruits and vegetables is a good idea. These items contain a lot of carbohydrates, which your body will use during the work out.

It's alright to have some protein and fat in your pre-work out meal, but only a small amount is recommended. Too much protein and fat can hamper the quality of your exercise.

If you eat a while before your work out but then feel hungry, it is fine to snack on a piece of fruit or have some fruit juice. Interestingly, many people confuse the feeling of thirst with hunger pangs.

Next time you feel a little hungry, it may just be your body telling you to drink some water or juice. Be careful, however, not to snack too often.

Taking note in your eating journal of every time that you eat can help you identify whether this is a problem for you. Some people eat because they are bored or lonely.

If you can take control of your eating habits, you can stop nibbling for those reasons and occupy your time with other things. Another way you can help yourself, is to drink lots of water and other liquids.

Because thirst can be confused with hunger, you may be eating when you're not actually hungry. Keeping fluids in your body will help you prevent unnecessary snacking.

If you do feel hungry, though, do not delay eating. Not eating until later can cause you to feel more hungry than normal, which will cause you to eat more in order to satisfy the hunger pangs.

When you do eat, try to incorporate lots of fruits and vegetables into the meal. Not only are these food items healthy and nutritious, but they will also fill you up.

A good rule to follow in any case is to use moderation in your diet. Don't eat too much of one type of food and neglect the rest.

Becoming fit is all about reaching a balance in diet and exercise. Do not get discouraged after only a few weeks.

Changing habits takes time and will power. You can do it if you pay attention to what you eat and take care of your body.
