One of the more popular outdoor sports in mountain biking. The sport combines the dynamic experience of riding with the scenic views and difficulties associated with the trails.
The landscape is often beautiful, but it is also the challenge that needs to be overcome in order to reach a destination. Getting over the terrain can be difficult at times, so riders will need to employ form and technique to overcome the obstacles that may come up.
One of the most powerful assets that riders have is their bike itself. More specifically, participants have access to a gearing system that allows them to modify how much effort must be put in to complete a repetition, allowing them to maintain pace even through technical terrain and steep inclines.
Above all else, participants should strive to maintain pace while they are engaged in the activity. There are several reasons why it is important to do this, but they all revolve around keeping the person moving forward.
If the person stops for any reason, then it is very difficult to get going and build up pace again. To begin with, the person has ceased to use their muscles, and the down time where they are not engaged allows them to tighten up again, and go into a healing state.
This means that the participant will have to warm up their muscles again, so they will not be able to reach their potential for some time. There will be resistance to this, so the act of warming things up again can be physically painful and restrict movement down the trail.
The cardiovascular system of the person will cease to be as productive for much the same reason. It was engaged and pumping as the person was riding, but is has slowed down now that they have stopped.
Since the cardiovascular system is the primary way that stamina and endurance are accessed, stopping the function of the heart and lungs and allowing them to idle. They will cease to be active, and will instead become more passive in nature while the body is at rest.
This means that the person will need to get up their heart rate again in order to be as effective. The problem is that when the cardiovascular system is in such a resting state, it does not want to be taken out of it.
Additionally, there is a certain mental aspect present that must be addressed. When people are riding their mountain bike, they develop a rhythm that allows them to focus their energy and focus on the task at hand.
Disrupting that rhythm will make it so that the person will struggle with things like motivation and momentum. Essentially, resting is generally disruptive to the athlete who is engaged in the activity.
Instead of taking a formal break, the participant can instead gear down so that they don't have to push as hard. They can cruise by on this setting until they get more stamina that they can bring to bear.
It does not matter how fast they are going or how far they travel in their geared down state, as long as the individual stays moving. If a drink is needed, then the person can reach down and sip constantly from their water bottle.
Taking big drinks, especially when at rest, can cause cramping later, so it is best to sip at the water. A good way to ensure that the body gets its supply of fluid while still moving is to take a mouthful of water and very slowly swallow it, cradling it in the pouches of the cheeks.
Maintaining pace is something that will be naturally established as the participant works out on their mountain bike. The key is to maintaining this pace over time, especially when other factors cause feelings of tiredness.
Being able to gear down and cruise very slowly with a minimum of effort will help the athlete maintain their performance and avoid exhaustion. Building up this skill will allow longer and more effective rides in the future.
Maintaining pace is important when someone is riding a mountain bike. This is because of the way that the terrain is so variable, being able to keep going no matter what it something that needs to prioritized, in the interest of making progress.
